Old glass bottle stoppers can become a colorful garden accent, a paperweight, or a small display piece without cutting or drilling them. Start with the stopper’s shape and condition: some have a flat base, some are pointed or hollow, and others have a shank or cork or plastic fitting. Choose a use that suits the piece, and favor reversible ideas before permanent changes.
Choose a project that fits the stopper
A bottle stopper is more than a glass knob: its topper, shank, and any cork or plastic fitting affect how it sits or can be attached. Before starting, check for cracks or chips and decide whether you want to keep the piece intact. A rounded stopper may not stand securely, while a hollow one is not automatically watertight. - Flat base: useful for a stable tabletop accent or paperweight.
- Pointed end: can form the top of a bead-and-glue garden stake.
- Hollow top: may work as a tiny vase only if it safely holds water; dried flowers avoid that uncertainty.

For an inherited or especially attractive stopper, begin with a display idea that does not require glue or tools.

Six ways to reuse old glass bottle stoppers
1. Make a colorful garden stake
For a decorative stake, stack colorful beads along a stem and secure the pointed end of a glass stopper at the top with an industrial-strength adhesive. Hunker’s project names E6000 as one adhesive option and lists decanter tops and colorful beads among its supplies. Arrange the beads and stopper before gluing so you can check the balance and appearance.
This is a glued assembly, so it is less reversible than simply displaying the stopper. The project description does not establish how long the adhesive or assembly lasts outdoors; treat it as decoration rather than a load-bearing garden marker, and do not assume weather resistance. [Hunker]

2. Use a flat one as a paperweight
A stopper with a broad, stable top or base can hold papers in place on a desk or table. Test it on a level surface first: if it rocks, rolls, or tips easily, choose another use rather than trusting it to keep papers secure. 3. Display several in a clear vessel
Place a collection in a glass vase or bowl, grouping pieces by color, shape, or type. This keeps the stoppers visible while leaving each one unaltered, and it works even when they do not stand upright individually. Choose a vessel with enough room that you can lift pieces out without forcing them against one another.

4. Make a miniature flower display
A hollow stopper may hold a tiny flower or a small amount of water, but only use it as a vase if its interior is clean, stable, and demonstrably watertight. Many stoppers will not suit that job. For a lower-risk alternative, tuck in a dried flower or a small artificial stem without adding water. Some versions of this idea require adding a flat base; that is a permanent modification, so skip it if you want to preserve the stopper. [House Digest]
5. Turn one into jewelry or a hanging ornament
Wire-wrap a stopper or tie a loop around a suitable shank to suspend it as an ornament; beading wire and jewelry findings can help finish the piece. This no-drill approach avoids making a hole in the glass. Check that the stopper cannot slip out of the wrap, and keep a glass ornament where it cannot fall onto people, pets, or a hard walking surface.

Drilling is a higher-skill alternative, not a necessary step. Tutorials for drilling glass bottles call for a diamond bit, water, and protective equipment, but they do not validate a method for every stopper. Glass can break during drilling. If you do not already have appropriate glassworking experience, choose wire wrapping or display instead; do not attempt to drill a chipped or cracked piece. 6. Add one to a larger decorative arrangement
Set a stopper among indoor plants or flowers, attach it to a wreath, or include it in a hanging arrangement. A loose stopper is easiest to reposition; if you attach it, make sure the arrangement can support the glass securely. Avoid placing an unsecured piece above a seat, walkway, or area where children or pets might reach it. [House Digest]

When to keep it intact—and when not to modify it
Display in a vessel, a stable paperweight, or an arrangement that simply rests the stopper in place takes little effort and preserves the original object. Gluing beads into a garden stake or attaching a base changes it more permanently. Drilling carries the greatest breakage risk, and general bottle-drilling instructions are not stopper-specific. If the piece has sentimental or collectible value, favor a use that leaves the glass untouched.
