A shallow glass egg plate, an inverted wine bottle and a rebar stake can become a simple garden birdbath. The idea can be inexpensive if you already have the pieces or find them secondhand, but no full materials bill or price comparison establishes how much it saves over a stone bath. Here’s how the reported assembly works—and what to consider for water depth, placement and care.
What you need
- A shallow glass deviled-egg plate or similar dish
- An empty wine bottle
- A length of rebar to drive into the ground
- E6000 adhesive, as named in the project coverage
- Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning the glass contact surfaces
- A rubber mallet for driving the rebar
- Pea gravel or large, flat river pebbles for the basin
The cost advantage depends on reusing or thrift-shopping the plate and bottle. The project coverage does not provide a complete materials cost or a documented comparison with purchased stone birdbaths. (Hunker; House Digest)
How to assemble the birdbath
The following steps describe the method reported in the project coverage; it was not independently tested.
- Choose a level spot for the finished bath, then drive the rebar into the ground with a rubber mallet. Leave enough stake exposed for the bottle to sit over it.
- Clean the glass areas that will meet using isopropyl alcohol, then let them dry.
- Center the wine bottle’s base on the underside of the plate. Apply E6000 adhesive at the contact point and hold the pieces together while the joint sets.
- Leave the glued assembly undisturbed for 24–48 hours, as the project coverage recommends.
- Once the joint has set, invert the bottle and place its mouth over the rebar stake. Add water and arrange gravel or flat pebbles in the plate.
The coverage names E6000 but does not establish whether the adhesive is suitable for this particular outdoor assembly, water exposure or repeated weathering. Check the manufacturer’s current directions and limitations for the intended use before relying on the bond; do not assume it is waterproof or weatherproof.

Choose a shallow, usable basin
Add only enough water to keep the basin shallow, and use gravel or large, flat pebbles to create grip and shallower spots near the edge. Gardening Know How gives four inches as the maximum safe birdbath depth and notes that shallow edges can help smaller birds use a bath. Place it with predators and maintenance in mind

Keep the bath fresh and clean rather than letting water sit. If the plate is difficult to reach or scrub in place, take that into account when selecting the spot and deciding whether this design suits your routine.
What this DIY does—and does not—establish
This is a reuse-based alternative for someone who wants a handmade garden accent and already has, or can thrift, a suitable plate and bottle. The available coverage does not establish its long-term stability, adhesive performance, durability or savings against a purchased stone birdbath. Consider those unknowns before placing it where a falling glass dish could cause harm, and inspect the assembly periodically for movement or damage.
