Thread vintage doilies onto a length of string, then drape the line across a headboard for an easy, personal accent. Measure the headboard first, leave extra string for a gentle curve, and keep the finished banner clear of the space where you sit up to read.
What you need
- Vintage doilies—the number depends on the width of the headboard and how much space you want between them.
- String, or an optional alternative such as jute twine or colorful ribbon.
- Scissors and a way to secure the ends, such as headboard posts or wall-safe tape.
Beads, bows, buttons, faux pearls, artificial flowers, and battery-operated LED fairy lights are optional decorations, not necessary to make the banner.

Clean only if needed
If a doily needs cleaning, the Hunker article suggests hand-washing it in water with mild soap and laying it flat to dry. That is a general project suggestion, not specialist conservation advice for fragile or valuable heirlooms. If you are unsure whether a textile can tolerate washing, avoid treating this step as a guarantee of safety.

Measure and cut the line
Measure the headboard to estimate how many doilies will fit. Cut the string long enough to span it, adding extra length for a gentle curve and enough at both ends to tie or secure the banner.

Arrange the doilies
Choose the order before threading. A larger doily or one with personal meaning can take the center, or you can arrange the pieces more uniformly. Adjust the gaps to suit the width and look you want.

Thread each piece
Pass the string through openings on opposite sides of each doily. This helps the pieces hang flat rather than twisting around the line.

Secure the banner
Tie the ends to headboard posts, or attach the line behind the headboard with wall-safe tape. Check that the banner does not get in the way when you sit up to read. Tape suitability can vary with the surface and finish, so do not assume one adhesive will work on every headboard.
Ways to customize the look
Keep the banner simple for a restrained vintage accent, or make it more decorative with a different line or small embellishments. The source describes these as optional styling ideas, not tested requirements.
- Change the line: Substitute jute twine or colorful ribbon for string.
- Fold the doilies: Fold each one over the line instead of threading it through openings.
- Add accents: Consider beads, bows, buttons, faux pearls, or artificial flowers.

The appeal is in displaying lace with a story—whether it is an heirloom or a thrifted find—instead of leaving it tucked away. The result can suit English-country or granny-chic bedrooms, but the spacing, choice of center piece, and amount of decoration are entirely personal. The TikTok account brin.ck’s caption, reproduced by Hunker, described the look as adding “character in a granny way.”
