A printed map backsplash replaces a conventional tile look with a place that means something to you. You can buy a purpose-made peel-and-stick mural or make a removable-looking panel by mounting a paper map on plywood—but the DIY paper version needs a protective finish and should not be assumed to hold up like purpose-made mural material.
What makes a map backsplash different?
A map turns the wall behind a counter into a personal display: choose a hometown, a favorite destination, or a map tied to a memorable trip. Hunker describes the result as a “conversation starter” and an alternative to plain subway tile; that is a design suggestion, not evidence of a measured trend. Hunker’s map backsplash project is the source for the DIY approach and its design framing.
Choose between a ready-made mural and a DIY map panel

Its claims that the product is removable, oil-repellent, and waterproof are seller claims, not independent test results. The retrieved listing named WonederHome as seller and showed no product ratings; availability and listing details may change.

How Hunker describes making a paper-map panel
The following is Hunker’s described process, not a personally tested installation guide. Confirm the instructions for your specific plywood, adhesive, coating, and wall before starting.
- Prepare the wall. Hunker says to clean it with warm, soapy water and remove outlet covers that obstruct the panel.
- Measure and cut the backing. Cut ½- to ¾-inch plywood to fit the backsplash area, including openings for outlets.
- Attach the map. Glue the map onto the panel and smooth bubbles with a vinyl application tool or straight edge. Let it dry.
- Seal the paper. Hunker recommends multiple coats of clear, water-based polyurethane or polyacrylic. It advises against shellac in warm, moist environments.
- Mount the panel. Hunker describes using Loctite PL construction adhesive and calls it waterproof. Check the exact adhesive’s current label and instructions for substrate compatibility, application, curing, and exposure conditions.
The article does not identify a specific map paper, adhesive, or coating product, nor does it establish tested limits for heat or moisture. It also does not verify wall compatibility, local requirements, or safe clearances around cooking equipment. Those details need product-specific instructions and applicable local guidance.

What to check before choosing a mural
- Material and finish: Find out whether the surface is paper, vinyl, or another material and whether its maker requires a protective coating.
- Coverage and seams: Compare total dimensions with the area to cover, account for trimming, and check whether the map pattern aligns across panels.
- Wall condition and removal: Verify the required surface preparation and the product’s removal directions. A marketplace claim that a mural is removable does not establish whether it will damage a particular wall or finish.
- Kitchen exposure: Look for manufacturer-stated limits for heat, moisture, and grease. Neither the cited listing nor Hunker’s project establishes a safe temperature rating or clearance near a range.
- Full project cost: For a DIY panel, include plywood, map, adhesive, sealer, tools, and installation—not just the paper. Compare product costs by covered area rather than treating a single listing as a market average.
Why broad cost comparisons can mislead
Hunker’s 2026 article reports $700–$1,000 for traditional tile backsplash installation and says peel-and-stick wallpaper can cost under $30. It provides no underlying source, geography, project size, or methodology for those figures, so they are not verified estimates or current market averages. They also do not establish an apples-to-apples comparison with a particular mural or a finished plywood project.
