Southwestern character can make a cold-climate home feel warmer without requiring an adobe exterior. These five projects show how earth-toned plaster, exposed wood, stone, textiles, and crafted details can bring the look indoors, while radiant floors, fireplaces, insulation, and considered window placement address winter comfort. Three examples are in Colorado; the Tucson and northern New Mexico homes are regional precedents, not cold-city projects.
What gives a home Southwestern character?
The style is more than adobe walls. Its visual language draws on earthy color, sculptural forms, plaster, exposed timber, organic textures, and handmade or woven objects. Interior designers Sarah West and Corrine Mathern describe the appeal in Homes & Gardens: “At first look, the exterior architecture is earthy and sculptural, formed of sun-baked adobe bricks and finished with stucco, composed by craftspeople using techniques honed over time.” Mathern adds, “Adobe-style homes are rooted in the landscape – they feel like an extension of it.” (Homes & Gardens on adobe-style homes)
For a painter, that offers a practical starting point: build a restrained palette around clay, sand, warm white, and other earth-derived neutrals, then let texture and a few crafted accents add depth. Mathern describes interiors with “thick walls, exposed beams, organic textures, and a quiet palette that evokes an honest portrayal of the surrounding environment.” A Southwestern woven throw pillow or textured terracotta vase can suggest the look at a modest scale, but neither replaces the effect of plaster, timber, or architectural form.
Three Colorado homes show the look in cold-weather settings

2. Modern Adobe Home, Northern Colorado
This builder describes the project as inspired by the client’s interest in the Southwest and adobe architecture. Two Southwestern precedents offer climate and craft lessons
4. Barrio Historico House, Tucson
The AIA case study describes a contemporary interpretation of historic Sonoran courtyard architecture. Two shaded courtyards shape the indoor-outdoor experience. Insulated concrete-form walls and minimal west-facing windows are part of the project’s response to its setting; a shaded south-facing terrace admits low winter sun onto a concrete floor. 5. Abraham Residence, Ranchos de Taos
John Barton Architects lists adobe and flagstone walls, adobe interior plaster, passive solar heating and cooling, fireplaces, and radiant floor heat at the Abraham Residence. The firm frames the contemporary home as connected to the high-desert landscape and northern New Mexico traditions. How to adapt Southwestern warmth to a cold-climate home
Start with the surfaces and palette
Use earth and neutral colors as a foundation, then bring in surface variation through plaster-like finishes, natural stone, exposed wood, and woven textiles. A simple palette helps those materials register without making every wall or furnishing compete for attention. In a painting project, consider how warm colors shift with daylight and nearby wood or stone before settling on a whole-room scheme.
Plan comfort as part of the design
Radiant floors appear in the Colorado and New Mexico project descriptions; fireplaces are documented at the Abraham Residence. These are examples of systems selected for particular homes, not a blanket specification for every remodel. Insulation, heating capacity, and window performance should be considered alongside the visual finish so that a room’s warm appearance is matched by suitable winter comfort.

Treat glazing and sun as site-specific
The Tucson house illustrates how orientation, shade, and window placement work together: it limits west-facing glazing and uses a shaded south terrace to admit low winter sun. A different latitude, exposure, or neighboring building changes the calculation. Do not transplant desert shading or solar strategies without considering the actual site and climate.
