Dunn-Edwards named French Press Coffee (DEBN07) its 2027 Color of the Year on October 1, 2026. The deep brown has a subtle plum undertone that the company says emerges as light changes, giving it more dimension than a flat brown while still allowing it to work as an elevated neutral. Its best use depends on how much of that dark, enveloping color you want in a room.

What French Press Coffee looks like
French Press Coffee is a deep, nuanced brown. Dunn-Edwards describes its undertone as subtle plum, and elsewhere as a whisper of warm purple. The company says that quality becomes more noticeable as daylight shifts. The reviewed sources do not provide numeric color coordinates or an independent color measurement, so the undertone is best understood as the manufacturer’s description rather than a precise technical specification.
Dunn-Edwards presents the shade as part of a broader move toward warmer, earthier colors and away from cool gray, stark white, and flat beige. That is the company’s interpretation of color direction, not a quantified measure of market preference. Its color archive lists French Press Coffee as the 2027 selection and Midnight Garden (DE5657) as the 2026 Color of the Year. Dunn-Edwards’ Color of the Year archive provides the company’s selections and color resources.

How to use French Press Coffee
The main choice is whether to use the brown across a whole intimate room or reserve it for selected surfaces. Dunn-Edwards recommends both approaches, with room size and natural light informing the decision.
Color-drench a small or intimate room
For an enveloping, mood-setting effect, Dunn-Edwards suggests using French Press Coffee across the walls of a powder room, study, or entryway. Taking the color over a whole room creates a more dramatic result than using it as a single accent. The company also recommends color-drenching in smaller spaces; this is a design suggestion, not a guarantee that the shade will suit every room.

Use it as an architectural accent in a larger room
In a larger, light-filled space, the manufacturer suggests placing the color on a fireplace surround, interior doors, detailed trim, or cabinetry. These areas give the brown presence while leaving more of the room’s surfaces light. Its professional blog also names built-ins, crown molding, mantels, and window sashes as possible applications.
Consider it for exterior details
Dunn-Edwards recommends French Press Coffee for front doors and as an alternative to black on shutters, garage doors, and trim. It also suggests pairing the shade with taupe, mushroom, or cream for exterior contrast. These are the company’s application ideas; the cited sources do not establish independent durability or application-test results.

Colors and materials to pair with it
Dunn-Edwards recommends earthy greens, clay tones, and soft creams with French Press Coffee. Its professional blog adds warm mushroom tones, creamy off-whites, natural stone, and stucco. Homes & Gardens reports that Lauren Hoferkamp, Dunn-Edwards’ Color Marketing Manager, also suggests deep greens, muted sage and olive, dusty rose, terra-cotta, soft ochre, and camel.
For materials, the company calls out walnut, aged brass, honed marble, and linen against the dark brown. Hoferkamp’s additional suggestions, as reported by Homes & Gardens, include walnut and oak, leather, and warm-veined stone. These pairings offer different effects: warm whites and creams keep the contrast gentle, while greens, clay colors, or dusty rose add more color alongside the brown.
