The 2025 Audubon Photography Awards expanded beyond the United States and Canada to include residents of Chile and Colombia. The change added a South American contest—not eligibility across all of South America—and introduced prizes focused on migratory birds and conservation.
Which South American countries joined the awards?
Chile and Colombia were the only South American countries included in the 2025 expansion. On January 15, 2025, the National Audubon Society announced that residents of both countries could enter alongside residents of the United States and Canada. Audubon described the awards as being in their 16th year and connected the expansion to telling stories about bird migration, biodiversity, and conservation across the hemisphere. Audubon’s announcement did not extend eligibility to every country in South America.

What new themes did Audubon add?
The expansion included two new prize themes. Birds Without Borders recognized birds whose migrations cross national boundaries. The Conservation prize was for images showing conservation challenges or actions that help birds thrive. The themes made the new regional contest a way to tell stories about birds and the places and borders they move through, rather than simply broadening the list of eligible entrants.
