To fix peeling or chipped kitchen-cabinet paint, first correct the cause—such as grease, moisture, or a slick surface—then remove loose paint to a sound edge, prepare and test the surface, prime if needed, and repaint with a cabinet-suitable finish. A dab of paint over a loose edge usually hides the damage only briefly. If the home is in the United States and was built before 1978, consider lead safety before disturbing old paint.
Why is the paint peeling off kitchen cabinets?
Peeling means the coating has lost adhesion to the cabinet or to an earlier paint layer. The visible chip may be smaller than the area of weakly bonded paint underneath, so check beyond the obvious edge before making a repair. Sherwin-Williams lists hard, slick or glossy surfaces, contamination, moisture, and poorly adhered older coatings among possible causes in its peeling guidance and guidance on hard, slick surfaces.
- Slick or glossy finish: A new coating may not grip a hard, smooth surface reliably. Sherwin-Williams states that coatings applied to hard, slick, glossy surfaces are likely to peel because adhesion is difficult to achieve.
- Grease or dirt: Kitchen residue can interfere with paint adhesion, so clean the surface before priming or painting.
- Moisture: A leak or other source of excess moisture can damage the paint film. Find and correct the source before refinishing.
- Weak old paint: A new coat cannot secure an older layer that is already coming loose; the fresh finish may peel away with it.
Do not paint over a recurring or spreading failure until you have addressed the underlying condition.
Can you touch up chipped cabinet paint?
Yes, if the damage is small, the surrounding paint is firmly attached, and the cause of failure has been corrected. Remove loose or cracked paint around the chip until the edge is sound, then clean, prepare, and repaint the repair. If paint lifts in sheets, keeps peeling beyond the visible chip, or fails an adhesion check, a small dab is unlikely to last; remove the unsound coating and prepare a larger area.

Check lead risk before scraping or sanding
In the United States, paint in a home built before 1978 may contain lead. The EPA warns that people in pre-1978 homes and buildings—especially where paint is peeling or chipping—may face lead exposure risk. Its home lead-safety guidance advises repairing small damaged areas under 6 square feet without sanding. If sanding is needed, EPA advises wetting the area, sanding the minimum area, and cleaning thoroughly. This threshold describes EPA’s advice for small damaged areas; it is not a general guarantee that any repair is safe.
For renovation, repair, or painting in a pre-1978 home, EPA recommends hiring a lead-safe certified contractor. See the EPA RRP consumer guidance and follow current EPA and applicable state or local requirements. Do not dry-sand suspected lead paint or treat ordinary cleanup as sufficient where lead dust could be generated.

How to repair peeling or chipped cabinet paint
- Inspect the damage and address its cause. Check whether the paint is lifting only at one chip or separating in a wider area, and look for nearby moisture or leaks. Repair water intrusion or other underlying problems before refinishing.
- Remove paint that is not sound. Where lead risk is not a concern and the repair method is appropriate, remove loose, cracked, or poorly bonded coating back to a firmly attached edge. Avoid enlarging the repair unnecessarily.
- Clean and dry the cabinet. Use a cleaner or degreaser suitable for the cabinet surface. Rinse if its directions call for it, then let the surface dry fully. Dirt and grease left under the new coating can undermine adhesion.
- Prepare the existing finish and test adhesion. Glossy areas may need to be dulled, depending on the surface and product directions. Test the chosen primer or coating in an inconspicuous area prepared the same way as the repair. Let the test dry before checking whether it bonds. Sherwin-Williams notes that sanding may not be necessary for most clean, paintable surfaces if its test bonds well; that advice is not universal, so follow the instructions for your cabinet material and chosen products.
- Fill and smooth imperfections. Apply suitable wood filler or putty to surface defects, allow it to dry as directed, and sand smooth where lead-safe and appropriate. Remove dust before coating.
- Prime if the surface needs it. A compatible adhesion-promoting primer can help on a slick or previously painted surface. Confirm that the product is suitable for the substrate and topcoat, test it on a prepared inconspicuous area, and follow the current label. Sherwin-Williams names Extreme Bond Primer in its cabinet-painting instructions; this is an example, not a guarantee that it suits every cabinet.
- Apply a cabinet-suitable finish. Follow the topcoat label for application, drying, and recoat times. Sherwin-Williams names Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel for cabinets, doors, and trim in its cabinet project guidance. Product suitability depends on the cabinet surface and preparation.
- Wait before handling or reinstalling hardware. Let each coat dry and cure as the manufacturer directs. Sherwin-Williams’ project guidance recommends about 24–48 hours between coats and before reinstalling hardware, but conditions and products vary; use the current product label rather than treating that interval as universal.
Do you need primer to repaint kitchen cabinets?
Not automatically. The right choice depends on the cabinet material, the condition and sheen of the existing finish, and the primer and topcoat instructions. If the prepared surface remains slick or adhesion is uncertain, an adhesion-promoting primer may be appropriate. If a prepared, inconspicuous test bonds well, the applicable product guidance may not require sanding or a separate primer in every case. Do not skip preparation, and do not assume one manufacturer’s recommendation applies to every cabinet coating.
