Yes, laminate cabinets can be painted if their surface is clean, firmly attached and prepared with a coating system intended for slick surfaces. Thermofoil is different: the paint guidance cited here does not establish that thermofoil doors can be painted reliably. Identify the door material before starting, and follow one product system’s instructions from preparation through topcoat.
Laminate vs. thermofoil: identify what you have
Laminate is a smooth synthetic facing. Several paint manufacturers publish instructions for coating laminate, melamine or Formica, making a suitable paint system a viable option when the facing is sound. Sherwin-Williams, for example, lists cleaning, light sanding, bonding primer and paint in its laminate-furniture guide; Rust-Oleum’s BONDZ guidance lists laminated Formica cabinets among its uses.

Thermofoil doors have a film facing, but the cited paint guidance does not directly establish paint adhesion or durability on thermofoil, or whether painting affects a cabinet warranty. Do not assume laminate instructions apply to thermofoil. Check with the cabinet maker or a cabinet refinisher before coating it, especially if the film is lifting, bubbling or damaged.
When painting laminate is a reasonable option
Proceed only if the decorative facing is firmly attached and the surface can be made clean, dry and free of grease or other contaminants. A bonding primer or a paint system specifically directed for laminate can improve the prospect of adhesion, but no coating should be treated as a repair for loose or failing film. Rust-Oleum’s BONDZ guidance calls for a clean, dry, sound surface.

Preparation details depend on the selected products. Sherwin-Williams’ laminate-furniture example uses 150-grit sandpaper to dull the surface; Benjamin Moore’s general laminate-furniture guide calls for 220-grit and warns against oversanding. These are separate product-guide examples, not instructions to combine or substitute at will.
How to paint laminate cabinets
- Inspect the facing. Look for lifting edges, bubbles, cracks or loose areas. Paint directions do not establish that coating will fix failing decorative film; get professional advice or address the underlying condition before proceeding.
- Remove residue carefully. Sherwin-Williams notes that old adhesive residue may need careful removal and recommends testing a chemical remover in an inconspicuous spot first.
- Clean and degrease. Remove kitchen grease and other contaminants, then let the surface dry fully. Rust-Oleum’s primer guidance also requires the surface to be clean, dry and sound.
- Scuff only as directed. If the chosen system calls for sanding, dull the gloss lightly rather than cutting through the thin decorative layer. Use the grit specified by that system; do not combine one brand’s sanding advice with another brand’s primer directions.
- Remove all sanding dust. Dust can interfere with coating adhesion and finish quality. Benjamin Moore’s Cabinet Coat instructions also call for light fine sanding and dust removal for melamine laminate or Formica.
- Apply the chosen primer and topcoat system. Follow the product label for application, ventilation, drying and recoating. For example, Sherwin-Williams recommends Extreme Bond bonding primer in its kitchen-cabinet guidance. Benjamin Moore’s general guide recommends INSL-X STIX, while the Cabinet Coat technical data sheet specifies no primer for melamine laminate or Formica when using that product system. Those directions are product-specific alternatives, not a universal primer rule.
- Test the complete system first. Apply the proposed preparation, primer if specified, and topcoat to a hidden area. Let it dry or cure for the period required by the manufacturer, then assess adhesion before painting all the doors. Sherwin-Williams recommends an inconspicuous-area primer test for kitchen cabinets.
Apply thin, even coats and observe the chosen product’s recoat times. Benjamin Moore’s general guide recommends allowing coats to dry fully and waiting a day between coats for best results; that timing is not a general rule for other products.

What to do if the doors are thermofoil
Do not treat a successful laminate procedure as proof that thermofoil will accept paint. The manufacturer instructions cited for laminate, melamine, Formica and cabinet coatings do not directly establish thermofoil-specific adhesion, expected service life or warranty coverage. Ask the cabinet maker whether it has an approved coating method, or consult a cabinet refinisher who can assess the exact door and film condition before work begins.
If a coating route is not supported for your doors, compare refinishing or replacement based on the exact facing and condition, finish consistency, preparation and cure time, and total cost. The cited sources do not provide comparable cost or durability figures, so they cannot establish that painting is cheaper than replacement or that it will last as long.
