A coffee table may be too small if it looks lost beside the sofa or is awkward to use—but there is no single measurement that makes it wrong. Start with its length, then check its height, reach, spacing and fit with the rest of the seating area.
Compare the table’s length with the sofa
Measure the sofa from arm to arm, then compare that length with the tabletop. Ethan Allen recommends a coffee table about one-half to two-thirds the length of a sofa; Pottery Barn and Wayfair point to roughly two-thirds as a useful proportion. These are practical design suggestions from commercial buying guides, not a universal rule.
If your table is shorter than half the sofa’s length, that is a reason to look closely at how it works and appears, not proof that it must be replaced. A compact table may suit a smaller seating group, while a long sofa or sectional may call for a larger surface. For a sectional, Ethan Allen’s guidance compares the table with the longest side, measured from the arm to the interior corner.
Check the height against the seat cushions
Measure from the floor to the top of the sofa seat cushion and compare that with the table’s top. Pottery Barn recommends a table at cushion height or slightly lower; Ethan Allen suggests about one to two inches lower, and Wayfair says level with the cushions or a few inches shorter. Treat those as reference points: the useful test is whether the table feels comfortable to reach from the seats.

Make sure the gap works in your room
Measure the distance between the sofa and the table. Pottery Barn suggests about 18 inches, while Wayfair gives a range of 12 to 18 inches. These are practical recommendations, not code requirements. Choose a gap that lets people sit down, stand up and reach the tabletop without making the walkway uncomfortably tight.
Judge the whole seating arrangement
Length alone cannot tell you whether a table fits. Consider its depth and how easily people seated on different parts of the sofa can reach it. Then look at the table’s shape, the sofa’s depth and seat height, the other furniture, and the room’s circulation. World Market’s guide also emphasizes matching shape and size to the room. A smaller table may work well if it serves the seating group and leaves comfortable space to move around it.

Decide whether to keep it or look for another size
- Keep it if it suits the room visually, is comfortable to reach and leaves enough room to move, even if its length falls outside the common range.
- Reconsider the fit if it looks disproportionately small, provides too little usable surface for the seating group, or forces an awkward arrangement.
- When comparing alternatives, check length as a fraction of sofa length, tabletop height against cushion height, depth and reach, sofa-to-table clearance, and shape within the room.
