How to Put Pixel Art on a Floppy Disk

Encode monochrome pixel art as floppy flux timing, then view it in disk-analysis software. The image is not visible on the disk, and physical writing is experimental.

You can encode monochrome pixel art into the magnetic timing patterns of a floppy track, then view those patterns as a diagram. The image is not printed visibly on the disk, and the result is not ordinary usable floppy data. The experimental tool pbm2track converts a bitmap into a raw flux stream for compatible visualization software—and, with suitable hardware, an attempted physical write.

What “printing” pixel art on a floppy means

A floppy stores information as magnetic flux transitions. pbm2track maps positions in a monochrome bitmap to transition timing, producing a track whose timing visualization resembles the source image. You see the artwork in software that renders the track’s flux or timing—not by looking at the disk itself. The project README describes the utility as rendering monochrome bitmaps into floppy track timing diagrams; Hackaday’s coverage reports recognizable results in graphical views and on some physical floppy experiments.

This is an art and retrocomputing experiment, not a way to make a normal image file on a disk. The project maintainer, dbalsom, warns: “The tracks produced by this utility do not encode useful data – it’s total gibberish, as far as a floppy disk controller is concerned.”

What you need

  • A monochrome bitmap saved as PBM, in either P1 ASCII or P4 binary format.
  • pbm2track to generate a KryoFlux raw stream.
  • A disk-analysis or track-timing visualizer. The project README names HxC, AppleSauce, and FluxFox; in HxC, use Stream View rather than Track View.
  • For an attempted physical disk, a floppy and a writing setup that supports raw flux. A generic USB floppy drive should not be assumed to support this kind of write.

Generate and view the timing artwork

  1. Prepare the bitmap. Convert or draw the artwork as a one-bit monochrome PBM. The program samples the bitmap column by column; the selected pixel’s vertical position determines the transition-time value.
  2. Choose track parameters. Set the sample count, minimum and maximum transition times, and a track/head-specific output filename. Sample count affects horizontal resolution and track length; the timing range controls the image’s vertical dynamic range. Random jitter thickens the rendered “fluxcels.” Use --seed if you want repeatable output.
  3. Generate the raw stream. The README’s example uses 54,700 samples, a 2.0-microsecond minimum transition, and a 5.0-microsecond maximum. Treat those as example settings, not universal settings for every disk or drive. Consult the README for the exact command syntax and options.
  4. Open it in a visualizer. Load the resulting KryoFlux raw stream in a compatible tool and inspect the track timing diagram. The display is the image; the magnetic disk surface will not show a visible picture.

Can you write it to an actual floppy?

Possibly, but the project does not guarantee that a given drive, writer, or disk will accept the unformatted raw flux. The README reports a result using Greaseweazle 1.4, which is an example rather than a compatibility guarantee for all systems. Use writer hardware and software with documented raw-flux support, follow their instructions, and verify the result afterward. The README suggests setting added jitter to zero when writing, because the write process itself introduces jitter.

Floppy Disk Reader, 3.5 inch 1.44mb External USB Type A/C Floppy Disk Drive for PC, Laptop and Desktop Compatible with Windows 11/10/8/7/2000/XP, Not Compatible With Mac and Chrome (Frosted Texture)
  • 3 1/2 Floppy Disk Reader: As most modern laptops and desktop computers no longer come equipped with internal floppy disk drive for reading floppy diskettes, this 3.5 inch external USB floppy disk drive is an excellent solution to reading and writing your old floppy disks as easy as a built-in floppy disc reader. Retrieve Your Memories, for all the people that grew up with floppy disks, this is a return to the past.
  • Plug and Play Floppy Disc Reader: Just insert the floppy disk into the drive, then plug the USB type A/C connector to your computer and it will be automatically detected. Bring up Windows File Explorer, you will see drive A icon under "Devices and Drives", right click it and select open option, you could cut, paste, copy the files inside your floppy disks. Note: Please get power by the USB cable without using USB hub or USB extension cable, Insufficient power supply may cause malfunction
  • Ultra thin and Portable USB Floppy Drive: With ultra-slim (Only 0.63inch thick) design and lightweight(Only 0.52Ib), you can easily carry and use this compact USB floppy disk reader to retrieve your wedding photos, childhood photos, favorite poetry, university graduation thesis, novel manuscript and favorite songsinside your floppy disks at anywhere, no matter in the office, at school, at home or during travel. It's a great gift idea for someone who have a lot of memories in the floppy discs.
  • Broad Compatibility: This floppy disk reader is compatible with most PCs, laptops, and desktop computers with Windows 11/10/8.1/7/Vista/XP/2000 OS, but not compatible with Mac and Chrome. In Windows 11/10 systems, there has many show/hide options in File Explorer, so after opening "Windows File Explorer," you may not see the drive icon named "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)". Please open "Devices and Printers," right-click on the drive icon named "TEACV0.0" under "Devices," hover the cursor over "Browse Files," and then click on "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)," then you will see the contents of your disks
  • Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.

Timing and media constraints

For a stream intended for real media, dbalsom’s README advises avoiding transitions shorter than 2.0 microseconds on high-density media and 4.0 microseconds on double-density media. It also notes that longer maximum transition times lengthen the track. These are maintainer recommendations for this project, not guaranteed limits for every drive.

The same README suggests keeping a track at or below 200 ms for drives rotating at 300 RPM, and 166 ms for drives rotating at 360 RPM. Most floppy disks rotate at 300 RPM; some high-density 5.25-inch drives and some high-density 3.5-inch drives rotate at 360 RPM. Check the target drive and media rather than assuming a configuration will fit.

Choose the method that matches your goal

Goal Approach What to expect
See pixel art as a track timing diagram pbm2track plus compatible visualization software A flux-timing visualization derived from a monochrome bitmap; no physical floppy is required to inspect the generated stream.
Attempt the effect on physical media pbm2track plus raw-flux-capable writing hardware and suitable media Experimental. A successful write is not guaranteed, and the track is not conventional floppy data.
Keep image patterns on a conventionally readable disk PNG2disk, a separate approach covered by Hackaday Hackaday describes it as encoding images on readable disks with room potentially left for a filesystem; it is not the same timing-diagram method.

For ordinary disk-image files, copying a file onto a floppy is different from writing a raw sector image to it. Debian’s fdutils manual discusses conventional disk-image writing and recommends engaging the write-protect tab afterward; that guidance is not a recipe for writing pbm2track flux streams.
