To finish a Block of the Month (BOM) quilt, assemble the blocks according to the pattern’s final layout, measure the completed top, prepare backing and batting, layer and baste the quilt sandwich, quilt through all three layers, then bind the edges. Use your own BOM instructions for orientation, borders, seam treatment and measurements: those details vary by design.
1. Assemble the quilt top using your BOM pattern
Confirm layout and orientation
Lay out the completed blocks in the pattern’s final arrangement before sewing. Check their orientation carefully, then follow the pattern’s order for joining blocks and adding sashing, cornerstones, edge blocks or borders. The Mississauga Quilters Guild’s May 2026 BOM, for example, separates assembly into inner and outer sashing, corner and edge blocks, rows, joining the top and borders; it cautions that unit orientation affects how secondary motifs line up. See the guild’s assembly instructions.
Add borders as directed
If your pattern includes borders, use its specified method rather than assuming blocks or seams finished at their nominal sizes. One A Quilting Life BOM pattern directs makers to measure the center at the sides and through the center, average those measurements, then trim and attach the side borders. It repeats the process for the top and bottom borders, which are attached after the sides. That is one pattern’s approach, not a universal rule. Review the BOM pattern PDF.

Once the top is assembled, measure it and use those actual dimensions to plan backing, batting and binding. Follow any additional sizing rules from your pattern, batting maker or quilting service. Published project dimensions are examples, not standard cutting plans.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Exquisite Quilt Cotton Balls】- Crafted from 100% cotton batting, our quilt cotton balls offer a natural softness and warmth that enhances the comfort of your quilts. The cotton is fluffy and resistant to tearing, making it ideal for quilting projects.
- 【Washing Instructions】- Avoid pre-washing the batting before quilting. After finishing your quilt, wash it in a large washing machine with cold water and a small amount of liquid soap. Tumble dry on low heat and then place the quilt in the sun to dry thoroughly. Initially, the batting may appear thin and less soft due to compression packaging. You can quilt at this stage or pat the batting to restore its fluffy and soft appearance.
- 【Dimensions】- Our cotton batting is available in multiple sizes: 47×59 inches, 59x79 inches, 71x79 inches, and 79x91 inches. These large sizes are perfect for crafting quilts, pot holders, wearable art, and other projects.
- 【High-quality Cotton Batting for Quilts】- Our dense cotton pads do not require disassembly and can be washed after quilting. This ensures that your bedding products have evenly distributed cotton, providing superior comfort and durability.
- 【Ease of Use】 - Our cotton batting is designed for easy cutting and layering. The flat and even texture allows you to cut it to your desired size without worrying about uneven tearing or poor distribution.
- A National Park Service quilt example has a 56½ × 62½-inch top and specifies backing of at least 65 × 70 inches, which provides a four-inch overhang on each side. The page’s publication year is not stated. See the NPS example.
- The A Quilting Life BOM PDF also calls for backing at least four inches larger on all sides for its quilt. See its backing guidance.
- Half Yard Sewing Club’s 2025 BOM specifies at least 52 × 64 inches of batting and backing for that project. It names an 80/20 cotton/polyester batting it used; that blend is not a recommendation for every quilt. See the 2025 BOM tutorial.
Choose batting or wadding in a material and size suitable for your finished top and quilting plan. Check the package instructions for handling and quilting-distance limits.
3. Layer and baste the quilt sandwich
Stack the layers in the right order
The sandwich consists of backing on the bottom, batting in the middle and the quilt top on top. Half Yard Sewing Club describes the patchwork side facing up and the backing right side down. Its tutorial puts it this way: “Once you’ve joined the blocks, your quilt top will need to be assembled in a ‘quilt sandwich’, with the patchwork right side up on the top, the wadding/batting in the middle, and the backing right side down on the bottom.” Read the tutorial.

Pre-cut and vacuum-packed for convenience, suitable for everything from small crafts to full-size quilts. Easy to handle and store during sewing or quilting workflows
- 2. 100% Natural Cotton Material – Safe and Breathable Crafted from unbleached, chemical-free cotton. This natural material is soft, low-irritation, and allows air to circulate easily, helping maintain comfort and insulation in handmade textile projects such as quilts, cushions, or bags
- 3. Lightweight, Breathable and Easy to Work With This batting fabric features a low-loft profile that is easy to cut, shape, and layer. The material is odorless and breathable, offering a balance of structure and softness. Supports both hand-sewing and machine quilting techniques
- 4. Versatile Application for DIY and Handmade Projects Can be used in quilting, sewing, stuffing, craft padding, potholders, placemats, bags, wall hangings, and more. Also compatible with crib size, twin size, and king size quilting formats, providing consistent texture and flexibility in use
- 5. Important Usage Note Due to vacuum packaging, the batting may appear compressed upon arrival. Allow at least 48 hours to regain full loft; gentle patting or shaking can help accelerate recovery. Do not pre-wash before quilting. Machine washable after quilting is completed
Spread the backing flat with its wrong side facing up, place the batting over it, then lay the top right side up. Smooth out wrinkles and keep the layers aligned before securing them.

Basting temporarily holds the layers together while you quilt. Options described in the BOM tutorial include hand basting with needle and thread, safety pins, a tacking gun with tacks, and spray adhesive. For pins or tacks, begin near the center and work toward the outside while smoothing the fabric. If using adhesive, follow the product’s current directions and check that it is suitable for your materials; the cited tutorial applies adhesive to the batting rather than the backing.

4. Quilt through all three layers
Quilting stitches pass through the top, batting and backing to secure the sandwich. Choose a design that suits the quilt and your equipment. A home machine can be used for quilting; the Half Yard Sewing Club tutorial lists a sewing machine with a walking foot, or a free-motion foot for free-motion work. These are workflow options, so check that a foot is compatible with your machine.
Consider the quilt’s size, available workspace, your comfort supporting and guiding the layers, the design you want and the time involved. A long-arm quilting service is another option if you would rather not quilt at home. Ask the provider directly about preparation, dimensions and delivery requirements before handing over the quilt. The available guidance confirms both home and long-arm approaches but does not establish market-wide prices or turnaround times.

5. Trim and bind the quilt
After quilting, trim the excess layers as directed by your pattern or quilting service, then bind the raw perimeter. Follow the BOM’s binding width and method. A double-fold binding is one common option: the Half Yard Sewing Club tutorial describes joining strips with diagonal seams before attaching the binding. For its own 2025 project, it estimates about 230 inches (5.85 m) of 2½-inch (6.5 cm) binding, or six 2½-inch strips if using one fabric. Those amounts apply to that quilt only.
