You can turn a small cross-stitch motif into a magnet by stitching it on plastic canvas or by mounting Aida stitching between wooden discs. “Quilty” describes the design influence—such as quilt blocks, hearts, or stars—not one standard magnet pattern. Choose a small motif first, then use a finishing method suited to its stitching surface.

Choose a construction method

The two approaches below use different stitching bases and backings. The available tutorials do not compare their strength, ease, safety, or long-term durability, so choose by the materials and finish you want rather than assuming one performs better.

Method Stitching base Backing or frame Finishing components
Plastic canvas 10-mesh plastic canvas, embroidery floss, needle Felt Glue and button magnet are listed as optional finishing supplies by Michaels’ beginner class.
Aida with wooden discs Aida cloth, embroidery floss, needle Two matching wooden discs; stuffing is optional Magnet and craft glue; the tutorial author used a neodymium magnet, but does not say that type is required. See The Girl With the Elephant Tattoo’s tutorial.

Gather supplies for the method you chose

Plastic-canvas version

  • 10-mesh plastic canvas
  • Embroidery floss and a needle
  • Felt for the backing
  • Scissors, with micro-tip scissors included in Michaels’ list
  • Glue and a button magnet for finishing, listed as optional by Michaels

Michaels describes a beginner class covering a simple pattern, plastic canvas, and finishing stitched work as a pin, magnet, or keychain. Its stated supplies are specific to that class; follow the instructions for the canvas, glue, and magnet you choose.

Aida-and-disc version

  • Aida cloth, embroidery floss, and a needle
  • Two wooden discs of the same size
  • A magnet and craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Optional stuffing and paint, as listed in the tutorial

The cited tutorial names these components but does not compare magnet types or specify a tested glue bond. Follow the product instructions for your chosen glue and magnet.

  • Three strong magnetic strips secure pages and highlight rows as you stitch
  • Magnetic ruler makes it easy to measure repeats, borders, and gauge
  • Ideal for cross stitch, embroidery, quilting blocks, knitting, and crochet charts
  • Slim, travel‑ready board slides into project bags for stitching anywhere

Stitch a small quilt-inspired motif

Pick a compact design that will fit the stitching area and leave enough room for the chosen backing or frame. Quilt blocks, hearts, and stars are common visual cues in quilt-inspired cross-stitch, but a larger pattern may need to be adapted rather than used at full size.

For example, Fat Quarter Shop lists Lori Holt’s Quilty Love as a design of 90 × 120 stitches. Its listed finished dimensions are 9 × 12 inches on 10-count vintage cloth, 6.5 × 8.5 inches on 14-count Aida, and 7.25 × 9.5 inches on 25-count Lugana. These are the pattern’s stated sizes, not magnet dimensions; the listing does not identify it as a magnet pattern. See the Quilty Love pattern listing.

Another source, Confessions of a Homeschooler’s 2026 Sew and Stitch with Me series, pairs quilt patterns with cross-stitch blocks and lists 14-count Aida, floss, double-sided craft tape, and sticky mounting board among its supplies. It describes free monthly releases and paid pattern options, but does not specify magnet finishing.

Finish the stitching as a magnet

Plastic canvas with felt

  1. Stitch your selected motif on plastic canvas, following the pattern and the canvas instructions.
  2. Trim the stitched canvas to the shape and size you want, taking care not to cut through the stitched area.
  3. Cut felt to cover the back. Attach it with a suitable glue, then attach a button magnet according to the glue and magnet manufacturers’ instructions.
  4. Let the adhesive set as directed before handling or placing the magnet on a surface.

This is a practical sequence for assembling the materials Michaels lists; the class description does not specify a particular glue, bond strength, or curing time.

Aida mounted with wooden discs

  1. Stitch the motif on Aida and prepare two wooden discs that match in size.
  2. Arrange the stitching with the discs as its frame or backing. Add stuffing only if you want to use the optional material noted in the tutorial.
  3. Use craft glue to assemble the stitched piece and discs, then attach a magnet as directed by the glue and magnet product instructions.
  4. Allow the adhesive to set as its manufacturer directs before using the magnet.

The cited tutorial describes this combination of Aida, wooden discs, a magnet, and craft glue, but does not establish that one assembly method or magnet type is stronger or more durable than another.

How do you attach a magnet to cross-stitch?

The cited projects use glue as part of the finishing: Michaels lists glue and button magnets for plastic-canvas work, while the Aida tutorial uses craft glue with wooden discs and a magnet. Choose an adhesive intended for the materials you are joining and follow its label for application and setting. The sources do not provide comparative adhesive tests or long-term durability results.

A separate Confessions of a Homeschooler finishing tutorial mentions hot glue, peel-and-stick mounting board, washers, and magnets for other stitched pieces. Those are examples from a different finishing project, not required supplies for either magnet method above.
