“Building Blocks Throw” refers to several different projects, not one universal pattern. The Mary Maxim version is an intermediate-plus crochet afghan; Yarnspirations has a separate free Red Heart crochet pattern; and AllPeopleQuilt’s version is a sewn quilt. Check the maker and craft before choosing a pattern or gathering supplies.

These projects share a title, not instructions or supply lists. The Mary Maxim crochet pattern is the relevant choice if you are looking for the intermediate-plus afghan specified below. A finished cotton throw sold by Made*Here New York also uses the Building Blocks name, but it is a separate diagonal multi-stitch product, not an established edition of Mary Maxim’s pattern.

How to get and use the Mary Maxim pattern
Mary Maxim describes the pattern as a download viewable with Adobe Reader or similar software. Its product page showed unavailable and backordered messaging at the time it was reviewed; that status is a snapshot, so check the current Mary Maxim listing for access information. Ravelry’s database identifies pattern #5707N with designer attribution to Veronica Lacaille (VeeKnits) and an April 2006 publication date; those are database details rather than instructions from the pattern publisher.

How the Red Heart crochet pattern differs
Yarnspirations lists its own Red Heart Building Blocks Throw as an easy free download, described as using Red Heart With Love. Its page reminds crocheters to make a gauge swatch. That is a different design from Mary Maxim’s intermediate-plus pattern; the sources do not establish that their instructions, dimensions, yarn quantities, or hook requirements are interchangeable. Yarn availability can also vary by selected shade, so confirm a color on the live listing.

If you meant the sewn quilt
The similarly titled AllPeopleQuilt project is a fabric-and-batting quilt, not a crocheted afghan. It specifies 75 blocks and a finished size of 50.5 x 59.5 inches. Its design is credited to Amy Walsh of Blue Underground Studios. Follow its own fabric quantities and assembly instructions rather than using either crochet pattern’s yarn list.

For the Mary Maxim version, the listed hook is 4.50 mm and the yarn category is medium worsted; its three color quantities are tied to that design. If you choose the Red Heart pattern, use that pattern’s own materials and gauge guidance. A shared title alone is not a reason to substitute hooks, yarn quantities, or instructions.
