Yes—gradients can print well on T-shirts, but the result depends on the printing method, artwork, and fabric. DTG handles full-color blends; screen printing recreates tonal fades with halftone dots and separate color layers; sublimation suits compatible polyester garments, especially white or light-colored ones.
How each printing method handles gradients

These are process distinctions, not guarantees of a particular shirt’s quality. The cited sources do not establish a universal break-even quantity, gradient-quality score, or wash-life comparison. Get quotes and approve a sample for the garment and artwork you plan to use.
Why a gradient can look uneven on a dark DTG shirt
DTG printers commonly place a white underbase beneath colored ink on dark garments. If a design fades by using transparency, the transparent pixels can interact with that underbase and make the fade look patchy rather than smooth. Printify’s gradient guidance flags garment color and printing approach as factors in the final result.
For a dark DTG shirt, ask the provider how its workflow handles transparent pixels. An opaque halftone gradient is one practical alternative: the artwork uses dots to create the impression of a fade instead of depending on a transparent edge. Request a sample on the actual garment color before approving a large order.

Preparing gradient artwork for screen printing
Screen printing does not lay down a continuous digital blend in the same way as full-color DTG. The artwork is separated into color layers, and halftone dots create the appearance of tonal transitions. The shop’s separation, registration, mesh, ink, and cure setup all affect how much detail survives on fabric.
ScreenPrinting.com’s Help Center describes 200–305+ mesh as better suited to fine details, halftones, and water-based inks. Treat that range as the source’s general process guidance, not a universal specification: the shop should recommend mesh and separation choices for the particular art, ink, and garment.

- Ask whether the shop will prepare halftone separations for your gradient and what process it recommends.
- For DIY screen production, the guide describes making film positives with an inkjet printer and compatible transparency film; confirm that the film works with your printer.
- Follow the ink maker’s curing-temperature instructions. ScreenPrinting.com recommends checking the temperature with a laser temperature gun or donut probe.
Choosing a method for your run
Quantity matters, but there is no supported universal number at which screen printing becomes cheaper than DTG. Gildan’s Europe 2024 comparison describes screen printing as economical for larger quantities and DTG as effective for short runs, full color, and fine detail. Mimaki likewise favors screen printing for larger runs of one design while noting the setup and added-color cost trade-offs. Ask providers for quotes based on your exact order rather than relying on a generic break-even rule.

Check the garment before choosing sublimation
Sublimation’s fabric and color constraints are central to whether it suits a design. Gildan’s Asia 2026 guide recommends 100% polyester and preferably white or light-colored fabric, and warns that unsuitable heat settings can melt polyester. Confirm fiber content and color with the actual garment supplier; regional recommendations do not establish that every product or workflow is available or behaves identically.

What to ask before placing an order
- Identify the garment. Confirm its fiber content and color with the supplier, especially if considering sublimation.
- Explain the fade. Tell the printer whether the gradient uses transparency and whether the shirt is dark. For dark DTG, ask how the white underbase will affect transparent regions.
- Confirm the production method. For screen printing, ask how the gradient will be separated into halftones and what mesh and process the shop recommends. For DTG, ask whether the design’s detail is suitable for the garment.
- Request a comparable quote and sample. Specify quantity, colors, setup charges, per-shirt price, sample approval, and care instructions. Approve a sample on the intended garment color where possible.
