To pin fabric, align the layers and place pins across the seam line so they hold the pieces steady but can be removed before the needle reaches them. Choose a pin suited to the fabric and number of layers; for delicate fabric, test in an inconspicuous spot if marks are a concern.
Choose a pin for the fabric and the task
Pin selection depends on the material, the thickness and number of layers, and whether you may press while the pin is in place. The American Sewing Guild’s pin guide describes these common choices:

| Fine or delicate fabric | Fine bridal, lace, satin, silk, or super-fine pins | These are intended for finer materials, but no pin is guaranteed not to leave a mark. Test discreetly if that is a concern. |
| Multiple or thick quilt layers | Long quilting pins | Useful for holding layers; piecing separate blocks is different from basting a full quilt sandwich. |
| Temporary basting of a quilt sandwich | Curved safety pins | The curve helps with insertion and holding quilt layers together. |
| Quilt binding folded over a raw edge | Binding clips | Clips hold the folded binding until stitching; they are a task-specific alternative, not a universal replacement for pins. |
The American Sewing Guild also identifies head style, length, thickness, and point style as factors when selecting pins. Glass-head pins are heat-resistant, while ordinary plastic ball heads can melt under pressing. Check the particular pin’s heat suitability rather than assuming a colored or decorative head is iron-safe. See the Guild’s pin-selection guidance.

How to pin a regular seam
- Align the fabric. Smooth the pieces, match their edges, and line up notches or seam intersections before pinning.
- Choose suitable pins. Use fine pins for delicate material, dressmaker pins for medium-weight fabric, and longer pins for thick or layered work.
- Pin across the seam line. Insert each pin perpendicular to the seam so it holds the layers together and is easy to remove. A common setup puts the pin heads toward your dominant hand; orient them for comfortable access. Threads and Boston University’s sewing-machine basics describe perpendicular placement.
- Sew toward each pin, then remove it. Stop before the needle reaches the pin and pull it out before continuing. AllPeopleQuilt cautions, “Don’t be tempted to sew over pins.” Needle contact can damage the sewing-machine needle, as Boston University’s guide explains.
There is no single pin spacing that suits every fabric and seam. Place enough pins to keep the aligned layers from shifting, while leaving them accessible to remove as you sew.

Pinning quilt layers and binding
Basting a quilt sandwich
Use long quilting pins or curved safety pins to hold the quilt layers temporarily. Arrange them with the intended quilting route in mind so they do not interfere with stitching where practical. Utah State University Extension discusses pin placement in relation to the quilting path in its machine quilting guidance; JOANN’s Quilting Field Guide covers quilting pins and curved safety pins.
Holding quilt binding
When stitching binding folded over a quilt’s raw edge, binding clips can hold the fold in place until it is sewn. JOANN’s field guide describes clips for this edge-holding task. For ordinary seams, choose between clips and pins based on access, fabric, and whether piercing the material is appropriate.
