Alan Bean, the Apollo 12 lunar module pilot who became the fourth person to walk on the Moon before devoting himself to painting spaceflight scenes, died on May 26, 2018, at age 86. NASA announced that he died at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Who was Alan Bean?
Bean was a NASA astronaut, lunar explorer and painter. NASA selected him in October 1963 as part of its third astronaut group. His career joined two kinds of firsthand work: flying missions and later interpreting those experiences on canvas.
What did Bean do on Apollo 12?
In November 1969, Bean flew as lunar module pilot on Apollo 12, NASA’s second crewed lunar landing. On November 19, he and mission commander Charles “Pete” Conrad landed in the Ocean of Storms. Bean became the fourth human to walk on the Moon.
During two moonwalks, the astronauts deployed experiments, inspected the Surveyor 3 spacecraft that had landed on the Moon in 1967, and collected 75 pounds (34 kilograms) of lunar rocks and soil, according to NASA’s May 26, 2018 family announcement. NASA’s release records Bean’s total as 69 days, 15 hours and 45 minutes in space, including 31 hours and 31 minutes on the lunar surface.

What was Bean’s career after Apollo 12?
In July 1973, Bean commanded the second crewed Skylab mission. NASA’s 2018 announcement describes the flight as a record-setting 59 days in orbit.
Bean retired from NASA in 1981 and turned to painting full time. He used his astronaut’s experience as subject matter, creating scenes of lunar exploration and spaceflight. NASA notes that some of his Apollo-themed canvases incorporated the texture of lunar boot prints and pieces of mission patches. The material and imagery connected the paintings to the missions that inspired them.
