Make funky fusible flowers by bonding fusible web to the back of fabric, cutting out the flower shapes, and pressing them onto a background fabric. You can trace and cut shapes by hand or use a compatible fabric die; the die is optional. Follow the directions for your specific fusible web, since heat and pressing time vary by product.

What you need

  • Fusible web
  • Fabric for the flowers and background
  • Pencil or fine-line marker, if tracing a design
  • Sharp serrated scissors
  • A pressing sheet, such as a Teflon sheet; Quiltish Corner also reports using parchment paper as an alternative
  • An iron and a flat pressing surface

Quiltish Corner provides a Funky Flowers design and alphabet on its Fusible Appliqué — Part 1 page, and says the method can also be used with a design of your choice. The alphabet is already reversed for tracing; do not assume other designs are reversed. You can also draw your own flower shapes.

How to make fusible flower appliqué

  1. Choose and trace the design

Prepare the flower shapes from a printed design or your own drawing. If the shapes include letters or other directional elements, check whether the design needs to be reversed before tracing.

  2. Bond the web to the fabric

Cut the fusible web and fabric to a manageable size. Place the web’s adhesive side against the wrong side of the fabric, then put a pressing sheet between the work and the iron to protect the iron from adhesive. Press as directed by the fusible web’s manufacturer.

  3. Test, cool, and cut

Test the chosen fusible on a scrap first, then let the bonded fabric cool before cutting out the shapes. Quiltish Corner describes its Soft Fuse example as about 3–4 seconds on a cotton setting without steam; that is a product-specific example, not a setting to use for every fusible web. See the tutorial’s preparation instructions and follow the directions for your own product.

  4. Arrange and fuse the flowers

Arrange the cut shapes on the background fabric, then fuse them in place using the product’s directions. Check the placement before pressing: once bonded, repositioning may be difficult.

  5. Decide whether to stitch the edges

For a lightly handled display wallhanging, the tutorial treats stitching as optional. Its edge-stitching guidance ties the choice to how much washing and handling the project will get.

Hand cutting or a fabric die?

Tracing and cutting by hand works without a dedicated cutter and lets you adapt the shapes to your own design. A die-cut route can help produce repeatable shapes, particularly when a project uses many pieces, but depends on having a compatible cutter and die. Choose based on the number of flowers, the value you place on uniform shapes, and whether you already own the equipment.

AccuQuilt documents a GO! Funky Flowers die, number 55042. Its 2023 GO! Fabric Reference Chart says to apply fusible-web backing before cutting and allows up to four pre-fused layers under the chart’s guidance. The die is an optional method; the evidence does not establish its current retail availability or price. AccuQuilt’s die and quilt project are separate references, and are not established as the same design as Quiltish Corner’s Funky Flowers pattern.
