A pot holder helps you grip hot cookware, and some styles can also protect a countertop as a trivet. Choose by the task and the specific item’s shape, grip, heat claim, and care instructions—not by material or a heat rating alone. For a hot pan moving from oven to counter, an oven mitt covers more of the hand and wrist or forearm.

What a pot holder is for
A pot holder is a compact kitchen protector for short handling tasks such as gripping a cookware handle or lifting a lid. Depending on its design, it can also be placed under hot cookware as a trivet. Check that the particular holder is intended for both uses; a product’s stated purpose does not apply to every pot holder.
A holder generally covers less of the hand and arm than an oven mitt. For moving a hot pan, the extra coverage of a mitt may be more suitable. For gripping a handle or setting cookware down, a flat holder may be more convenient.

- Fingertip holder: A smaller form designed to cover the fingertips. It is less coverage than a full mitt; check the item’s intended use and fit.
- Oven mitt: Covers more of the hand and wrist or forearm, which can be useful when transferring a hot pan.
Le Creuset distinguishes fingertip potholders from potholders in its textiles range, while Lodge describes its square product for both hand and surface protection. These are examples of particular product ranges, not universal definitions of every style. See Le Creuset’s textiles page and Lodge’s product description.

Pot holders may use textile, silicone, or a combination. The examples below are hybrid products: their manufacturer descriptions specify fabric or cotton construction with silicone. A material label alone does not establish how well another product grips or protects against heat.

Check grip, fit, and care before buying
- Grip: Look for the product’s actual grip treatment and whether it suits your task. Lodge describes a silicone exterior and non-slip grip; All-Clad describes a silicone treatment. Those specifications apply to those products, not to all silicone or cotton holders.
- Coverage: Match the shape to what you handle. A compact square or fingertip style offers less coverage than an oven mitt.
- Dimensions: Compare the listed size with the cookware handles and lids you need to hold. The cited Lodge and All-Clad products differ in shape and dimensions.
- Care: Follow the label or current product page for the exact item. All-Clad says its cited set is machine washable; Le Creuset says its textiles are hand-wash only. Do not assume one brand’s care directions apply to another product.
- Heat limit: Treat a stated temperature as a product-specific manufacturer claim, not a category-wide rating. Do not infer a safe exposure time or comparable performance unless the manufacturer provides that information.
