How to Add Big-Stitch Binding to Your Quilt

Fold the attached binding over your quilt edge, then sew it down with a visible running stitch. Choose a heavier thread, avoid stitching through the opposite face, and secure each corner tip.

To add big-stitch binding, fold the attached binding over the quilt edge and sew its folded edge down with a visible hand-sewn running stitch. Use a heavier thread, catch the binding and nearby backing-side layers without piercing through the quilt’s opposite face, and keep the tension even so the edge lies flat.

What you need

  • Heavier thread: Perle cotton No. 8 or No. 12, or 12wt thread, are examples used for a prominent big-stitch line.
  • Needle: Choose a sashiko needle or large-eye embroidery needle that comfortably accepts your thread and is manageable through the quilt edge.
  • Optional helpers: Binding clips can hold the fold in place, and a thimble can help push the needle through the layers.

A contrasting thread makes the line stand out; a coordinating color gives it a quieter look. Perle cotton No. 8, perle cotton No. 12, and 12wt thread are options rather than a tested ranking: the visible weight and the fit of the thread through your needle’s eye are practical considerations.

Attach and fold the binding

  1. Attach the binding to one side of the quilt sandwich using your usual binding method.
  2. Fold the binding around the quilt edge to the other side. Crease the fold and align its edge so it covers the line of attachment.
  3. Hold the folded binding in place with clips or another method that works for you. Remove or move clips as you sew.

The hand stitching will be visible on the side where you sew the folded binding down. Depending on which side received the initial machine attachment, that can be the quilt’s front or back.

Start the hand stitching and hide the thread end

  1. Cut a manageable length of thread and thread the needle. Tie a secure knot.
  2. Begin in a way that conceals the knot: you can start within the layers near the binding or place the knot beneath the binding. These are alternative approaches; the aim is to keep the start unobtrusive.
  3. If using hidden travel stitches to position the thread at the start, keep them beneath the binding or within the layers. AllPeopleQuilt describes stitches about 1–2 inches apart for this hidden travel; that spacing is not a recommendation for the visible running stitch.

Sew the visible running stitch

Take the needle through the folded binding and into the nearest backing-side layers, then bring it back out through the binding for the next stitch. Catch enough material to hold the fold, but do not let the needle emerge through the opposite face of the quilt. The resulting running stitch should show on the side you are binding.

Keep stitch length and thread tension as even as you can. Pull firmly enough to secure the binding, but not so tightly that the edge puckers. If controlling the stitch length is difficult, take one stitch at a time. If you are comfortable with hand stitching, you can load several stitches onto the needle before pulling the thread through.

Secure the corners

At each corner, check that the folded tip of the binding is caught and held down. Place a visible running stitch where it secures the tip; an additional small, hidden securing stitch is another option. Check the fold before moving on so the corner does not lift free of the stitching.

Finish a thread and continue

When the working thread gets short, secure it and bury the end between the quilt layers or beneath the binding. Leave enough thread to knot and bury it cleanly rather than sewing until there is too little to handle. Start a fresh length using the same concealed-start approach, then continue the running stitch.

What to expect from the finish

Big-stitch binding combines a visible decorative line with stitching intended to hold down the folded binding. Shannon Fraser Designs describes the method as “such a simple straight forward technique involving a running stitch”; that is the tutorial author’s characterization. The instructional guidance explains how to make the finish, but does not establish a quantified durability advantage or guarantee long-term performance.
