To set up a serger for a rolled hem, follow the instructions for your exact model: the setup may require a three-thread stitch, a change to the stitch finger, and model-specific width and length settings. On Brother models covered by its support guide, that means using the right needle, selecting R for width and length, and removing or lowering the stitch finger as directed. Sew a test on a scrap of your project fabric before hemming the garment or other finished piece.

What a serger rolled hem does
A rolled hem is a narrow edge finish: the fabric edge rolls under while the serger covers it with overlock stitches. Adjusting thread tension changes how much the edge rolls. Singer identifies lightweight fabrics such as lawn, voile, organdy, and crepe as examples suited to this finish; the result still depends on the fabric and machine setup. Singer S0705 User Guide
How to set up your serger
- Check the manual for your exact model. Confirm how it selects rolled-hem mode, which needle and thread configuration it requires, and what it says about the stitch finger, stitch width, stitch length, and tension. These controls and settings are not universal.
- Make the machine safe before changing needles. For the Brother models covered by its support guide, switch off the main power and light switch before removing a needle. Follow your own manual’s safety directions. Brother: How to set my machine up for a rolled hem
- Configure the needle, thread, and stitch finger as specified. On the Brother models in that guide, remove the left needle and use the right needle for a three-thread overlock. The stitch finger is removed on applicable models; the Airflow 3000 instead uses a lever to lower it. Other machines may use a different mechanism or configuration.
- Select width and length using the model’s directions. Brother lists the R position for both stitch width and stitch length on the models covered by its guide. Do not assume those positions—or any tension numbers—apply to another serger.
- Thread and set tension according to the manual. Tension affects how much the fabric edge rolls, but there is no universal tension setting for all machines and fabrics.
- Sew a test swatch before the project piece. Use a scrap of the same fabric and assess the edge. Adjust one control at a time, then test again so you can see what each change does.
Choose thread and fabric with the finish in mind
Three threads are used for the AirThread 2000D setup in Janome’s tutorial. Janome also shows woolly nylon in the upper looper as an optional decorative choice, not a requirement; check your own machine’s thread and needle requirements before substituting thread. Lightweight lawn, voile, organdy, and crepe are Singer’s examples for rolled-edge sewing. Because fabric response varies, the same-fabric swatch is the practical way to check whether your chosen setup produces the edge you want.
Adjust differential feed only in response to the fabric
Differential feed changes how the machine’s two sets of feed dogs move fabric. Brother explains that a ratio below 1.0 stretches fabric, while a ratio above 1.0 gathers it. That describes the control’s effect; it does not establish a single correct differential-feed setting for every rolled hem. Use your manual and test swatch to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Why settings should not be copied between machines
Rolled-hem controls differ by model: one serger may use a removable stitch finger while another uses a lever, and manuals may specify different stitch selections and settings. As a machine-specific example, the BERNINA Serger Workbook lists stitch length 1–1.5, cutting width 2–3, and differential feed N for its three-thread rolled-hem exercise. When the rolled hem is finished, restore the stitch finger or other parts you changed for regular overlock stitching. Brother specifically directs users of the models covered by its guide to reinstall or restore the stitch finger for ordinary overlocking; follow the equivalent instructions in your machine’s manual.
