A fabric gift bag is a reusable cloth container, usually closed with ties, ribbon, or a drawstring. Choose one by matching its finished dimensions and shape to the gift, then check its fabric, closure, construction, and care label. You can also sew a basic bag from cotton or non-stretch cotton-polyester fabric.
Choose a bag that fits the gift
Compare the bag’s dimensions with the gift before buying or making it. Consider the object’s width, height, and shape, and allow enough room to place it inside and close the top. A bottle, for example, calls for a shape designed around a bottle rather than just a wide, shallow pouch.

One maker lists these small, medium, and large sizes for its recycled-polyester bags. They are that seller’s specifications, not standard size categories:
| Seller’s size label | Dimensions | Material and closure listed |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 20 × 30 cm | Recycled polyester; wooden button and drawstring |
| Medium | 29 × 38 cm | Recycled polyester; wooden button and drawstring |
| Large | 38 × 50 cm | Recycled polyester; wooden button and drawstring |
These details come from the maker’s product description; dimensions and available stock can change. A Toronto studio describes its own fabric bags and squares as made with organic and recycled materials wherever possible, and says its ribbon construction forms a bow when tied. Those are the maker’s descriptions, not independent verification of environmental performance.

Compare fabric, closure, and construction
Fabric affects how a bag looks and how it should be cared for. Check the fiber content and the care label rather than assuming all cloth bags can be washed the same way. Prints and dyes may also affect washing: the American Cleaning Institute’s general reusable-bag guidance warns that some screen prints can bleed and suggests cold water for the first few washes. That general advice is not a guarantee for a particular gift bag.
- Closure: Ties, ribbon, and drawstrings can gather or bow at the opening; a seller may also combine a drawstring with a button. Check that the closure suits the gift’s size and shape.
- Seams and construction: Look for finished seams and a construction appropriate to the object being carried or presented. A bottle-shaped design is a more natural fit for a bottle than a flat square.
- Care: Read the actual product’s care label before washing, especially when the bag has a print, embellishment, or mixed materials.
Make a basic cloth gift bag
A simple sewn bag is an option if you want a particular size or shape. The University of Waterloo’s project resource frames the process around choosing the finished size and cutting a rectangular piece of fabric. Use the matching pattern or instructions for the construction details; fabric quantities alone are not a complete pattern.

The City of Chico recreation supply list gives these project quantities for cotton or non-stretch cotton/polyester blend fabric. Treat them as supplies for the corresponding project, not universal quantities: adjust for your pattern, finished size, and fabric width.
| Project | Fabric | Decorative cord | Single-fold bias tape | Thread |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small bag | 3/4 yard | 1 1/2 yards | 1 1/2 yards | One spool of all-purpose thread |
| Large bag | 1 1/4 yards | 2 yards | 2 yards | One spool of all-purpose thread |
| Bottle bag | 5/8 yard | 1 1/4 yards | 1 1/4 yards | One spool of all-purpose thread |
Use the instructions for the selected project to determine how the fabric, bias tape, and cord fit together. If you are adapting a pattern, decide the finished bag dimensions first and check that the cut pieces leave room for seams and the intended closure.

Wash and store it according to its care label
Fiber, dye, print, and construction vary, so the product’s own care label takes precedence over broad advice. The American Cleaning Institute gives these general guidelines for reusable bags, not a guarantee for every fabric gift bag:
- Cotton: machine wash and dry.
- Nylon or polyester: hand wash and line dry.
- Screen prints: some may bleed; the guidance suggests cold water for the first few washes.
Let a bag dry fully before storing it, and keep its tie or drawstring with it so it is ready to reuse.

Reuse thoughtfully and check local disposal rules
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency encourages reducing single-use bags and reusing gift bags and tissue paper. It also says it does not have information on the environmental benefits of paper versus plastic bags. The available guidance therefore does not establish that every fabric bag has lower lifecycle impacts than paper or another alternative.
When a fabric bag is worn out, check with your municipality or recycling provider before putting it in a recycling bin. The EPA says textiles generally cannot go in curbside recycling, while noting that acceptance depends on the local area.
Plastic-bag policy is separate context, not evidence about cloth bags: the European Commission describes lightweight plastic carrier bags under 50 microns as among Europe’s top 10 littered items and sets an EU target of no more than 40 such bags per person per year from 31 December 2025. Those figures concern lightweight plastic carrier bags, not fabric gift bags.
