This photo tour documents Lynne Hagmeier’s quilt shop and creative spaces in Bennington, Kansas, as they appeared in 2014. It offers a look at the Kansas Troubles fabrics, antique quilt inspiration, and practical sewing-room choices behind her work—not a guide to current hours, stock, or visitor access.
What the 2014 tour documented
American Patchwork & Quilting introduced Hagmeier as a quilter, fabric designer, teacher, and inventor. The feature says she and her husband, Robert, reopened their retreat house in 2013 and opened KT Bernina Quilt Shop and Emporium in Bennington, about 12 miles north of Salina. Its photographs and descriptions capture that period, rather than confirming what visitors will find today. Read the original 2014 tour.
The feature reported that Kansas Troubles had released 47 fabric collections since 2000. That is a figure reported in 2014, not a current count. Its editorial introduction also said the magazine’s staff had more than 70 years of combined quilting experience; that, too, is a claim from the original feature, not a current or independently audited statistic.

What the shop carried
The shop was described as stocking mostly Kansas Troubles fabric collections, along with patterns, gifts, and precuts. The feature also showed precut fabrics stored in an antique general-store fixture in Hagmeier’s workroom.

How layered patchwork works
In the technique described by the feature, patchwork shapes are sewn onto a background rather than pieced into it. That approach connects to Hagmeier’s interest in simplifying traditional blocks and working with precut fabric. As the 2014 article quoted her: “Every time I see a traditional block that has two dozen seams in it, I immediately see how to simplify it to make it easier to piece.”
For a project inspired by that idea, a precut fabric bundle is a practical starting point: choose shapes and colors that work together, then consider whether the design can be applied to a background instead of assembled from many small pieces. The tour documents Hagmeier’s approach, but it does not provide a complete pattern or step-by-step instructions for a specific block.

Antique quilts and vintage details
Hagmeier drew motifs from antique fabrics and used hundreds of antique quilts and quilt tops for inspiration. The tour also showed those quilts displayed as decor in the retreat center, alongside vintage sewing notions, toy irons, clocks, and other collected objects. Her color and print choices were summed up in the 2014 feature with this attributed remark: “People are drawn to the warm color palette and vintage prints.”

In her cabin sewing room, Hagmeier worked at a custom desk made from reclaimed wood by her son Neil. The tour describes different-height work tables and an insert for her sewing machine—details that show how the workspace was adapted to the tasks she performed, rather than arranged as a purely decorative room.

What to know before planning a visit
The 2014 feature is a historical snapshot, so it cannot establish present-day inventory, opening hours, or whether visitors may enter the shop or retreat spaces. Kansas Troubles Quilters’ official blog continued promoting precut bundles and quilt kits in posts from 2025 and 2026, but those dated promotions do not guarantee that a particular item is still available. The blog’s January 2026 post says the business decided not to host its yearly KT&Friends Retreat.
Travel Kansas lists the shop at 103 N Nelson, Bennington, KS 67422, and describes the business as a design studio and wholesale warehouse. Treat that third-party listing as location context, not confirmation of current public access or retreat availability. Check the Kansas Troubles Quilters blog or contact the business directly before making a trip; do not rely on the old tour or the listing for current visit logistics.
