The Bright Hopes quilt block is a square made from one center square and four rectangles. Its distinctive step is a partial seam: sew only partway along the first rectangle, attach the other three rectangles around the center, then close the open section of the first seam. It is approachable for a confident beginner if you keep that opening accessible until the end.
Choose a cutting recipe before you start
Cutting charts for a “6-inch finished” Bright Hopes block do not all use the same dimensions. Choose one complete recipe and follow its measurements throughout; do not combine the center square from one chart with rectangles from another.

| Source and version | Center square | Four rectangles | Size note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generations Quilt Patterns | 2.5 inches | 2.5 × 4.5 inches | 6 inches finished; 6.5 inches unfinished |
| AllPeopleQuilt | 3.5 inches | 2 × 5 inches | Described as 6 inches finished |

Generations Quilt Patterns also supplies cutting dimensions for 3-, 4.5-, 9-, and 12-inch finished blocks in its five-size chart. Use that chart if you want a size other than 6 inches, and keep its cutting dimensions together as a set. Generations specifies 1/4-inch seam allowances; the Red Pepper Quilts tutorial also uses a 1/4-inch partial seam.
Gather fabric and prepare the pieces
You need one center square and four rectangles. Scraps and assorted prints suit the design, but the block does not require a particular color scheme or fabric brand. The colors in the AllPeopleQuilt example are just one option.

- Choose one complete size recipe from the table above or the linked five-size chart.
- Cut one center square and four rectangles to that recipe’s dimensions.
- Use a consistent 1/4-inch seam allowance when following the Generations or Red Pepper approach.
- Keep the pieces in their intended order. The first seam will remain partly open while you attach the other rectangles.
Sew the Bright Hopes block with a partial seam
For the ordered layout below, “right,” “bottom,” and “left” refer to the edges of the center square as you look at the unit with the first rectangle positioned beside it. The AllPeopleQuilt instructions start with a partial seam, add the remaining rectangles around the center, and finish the first seam last.
- Start the first seam: Place the first rectangle against the center square. Sew from one end of the edge, but stop before reaching the other end. Leave enough of the seam unsewn that the free end of the rectangle can move; that open section is what lets the surrounding pieces fit.
- Add the right rectangle: Sew the next rectangle to the right edge of the center-square unit, following the chosen layout and matching raw edges.
- Add the bottom rectangle: Sew another rectangle to the bottom edge.
- Add the left rectangle: Sew the fourth rectangle to the left edge. The rectangles now surround the center, while the first seam still has an opening.
- Close the first seam: Fold or move the assembled unit as needed to bring the remaining raw edges of the first rectangle and center together. Sew the open section to complete the seam.
- Press: Generations Quilt Patterns recommends pressing seam allowances away from the center. Let the block lie flat, then check that it is square before joining it to other blocks.
Why the partial seam works
The partial seam is a controlled opening, not a Y-seam. If you sew the first rectangle all the way to the end at the start, the remaining rectangles cannot be added in the same sequence around the center. Leaving that section unsewn gives the fabric room to pivot; after the other three rectangles are attached, the unit can open enough to sew the first seam closed.

Difficulty labels vary: Generations calls its block beginner-level while acknowledging that partial seams can feel intimidating, whereas Scissortail Quilting rates its version intermediate. In practice, the key is not to rush the first seam. Keep its unsewn portion visible and free of later stitching, then finish it only after the other rectangles are in place.

Fabric406 shows how fabric choices and block arrangement alter the overall effect. Decide how much visual rest and color organization you want before making a large batch.

- All-over scrappy: Mix prints for a lively field with little visual pause.
- Color families: Group prints by color for a more organized rhythm; Red Pepper Quilts documents both low-volume fabrics and color-grouped blocks.
- Sashing or plain alternate blocks: Add visual breathing room between the patterned blocks.
- Basket-weave or alternating arrangement: Rotate or alternate blocks to change the way the shapes read across the quilt.
- Straight rows or on-point setting: Choose the arrangement that suits the quilt’s overall geometry; Fabric406 illustrates layout variations.
Red Pepper Quilts reported using 270 Bright Hopes blocks in one maker’s quilt project; that is an example of a finished project, not a requirement for making the block.
