Flannel Stars and Trees is a free throw quilt pattern by Peggy Kotek, published by AllPeopleQuilt. The finished quilt measures 54-1/2 by 72-1/2 inches and combines tree, star, and bow-tie blocks with plain setting squares.
What the Flannel Stars and Trees pattern makes
The design uses 25 pieced blocks: six trees, twelve stars, and seven bow ties. Each block finishes at 6 inches square. Plain squares fill out the layout in twelve rows, giving the throw its generous size without requiring every patch in the top to be pieced.
AllPeopleQuilt lists the finished dimensions as 54-1/2 by 72-1/2 inches. These are the pattern’s project specifications, not a measurement of a separately tested quilt.

When choosing quilting flannel fabric by the yard, focus on the pattern’s color roles rather than a particular brand: use medium and dark fabrics for contrast, lighter fabrics for backgrounds, green-and-cream plaid for the trees, and black-and-gold plaid for the binding. How the blocks are constructed
Tree blocks
Tree blocks combine a pieced green treetop with a brown trunk. The pattern assigns the green-and-cream plaid to the blocks; the full project instructions provide the cutting and assembly details.
Star blocks
Stars are built from flying-geese units. To make each unit, sew a small square marked on the diagonal to a light rectangle, following the pattern’s sequence and pressing directions.

Bow-tie blocks
Bow ties use diagonal corner patches sewn onto light squares. As with the other blocks, use the pattern’s diagrams and cutting instructions to assemble the pieces in the intended orientation.
Assembly and finishing
- Piece the blocks. Follow the pattern for the six tree, twelve star, and seven bow-tie blocks. Its instructions use 1/4-inch seam allowances.
- Arrange the quilt top. Set the pieced blocks among the plain squares and assemble the layout in twelve rows, following the pattern’s arrangement.
- Join the rows. Sew the rows together to complete the top.
- Layer the quilt. Place the backing, batting, and quilt top together, then secure the layers by tying or quilting as desired. The pattern lists brown No. 5 perle cotton for tying.
- Bind the edges. Finish with strips cut from the black-and-gold plaid binding fabric.
For the small squares used in the star units, AllPeopleQuilt recommends placing 220-grit sandpaper beneath the fabric while marking diagonal lines. The grip can help limit stretching during marking.
