To make a three-color pinwheel, decorate a square sheet of paper, cut inward from each corner without cutting through the center, then bring alternate corners together and fasten them loosely to a handle. Coloring the paper before assembly makes it easier to keep the three-color design clear.
What supplies do you need?
Crayola’s paper-pinwheel tutorial uses these materials and tools:
- Six-inch square of cardstock
- Construction paper or other paper for color and decoration
- Markers
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- Brass paper fastener
- Straw for the handle
Choose paper you can fold and cut comfortably. Crayola’s instructions use cardstock; they do not establish that one paper weight or brand spins better than another. The ERIC-hosted classroom paper-craft lesson also notes that paper can be colored before folding and cutting.

How to make a three-color pinwheel
- Color the square. Use markers to apply three colors before folding. For a simple pattern, color the four triangular areas at the corners in a repeating sequence, or divide each future blade into bands. These are design suggestions; the tutorial leaves color choices open.
- Fold diagonally. Fold the square from corner to opposite corner, crease it, open it, then fold along the other diagonal and open it again. The creases mark the center.
- Cut the blades. Starting at each corner, cut along the diagonal crease toward the center, stopping about three inches from the corner on the six-inch square. Keep the center intact so the blades remain connected.
- Punch the holes. Make a small hole at the tip of each blade and one at the center, following Crayola’s tutorial. Avoid tearing the paper around the holes.
- Bring alternate corners inward. Take one corner from each cut section and bring it to the center, alternating corners rather than folding every corner in. Align the punched holes.
- Attach the handle. Flatten the end of a straw and push the brass fastener through the gathered corners and the straw. Open the fastener behind the straw to hold the pinwheel in place.
How should three colors be arranged?
There is no prescribed three-color layout. For a balanced look, repeat the colors in the same order around the square. For a bolder pinwheel, use one color on each blade, or decorate each blade with all three colors. Keep the layout consistent across the four corner sections so the pattern remains visible after the corners overlap at the center.

Check that the cuts stop short of the center and that the paper is not trapped tightly against the straw. Crayola’s CIY Staff Tips advise: “Keep brass fastener slightly loose to help pinwheel spin faster.” This is the tutorial’s practical tip, not a measured guarantee of performance.
