Precut quilting fabric can save cutting time and make it easier to coordinate prints, but check its usable size and prepare it consistently with the rest of your quilt. Measure before sewing, use the peaks—not valleys—of pinked edges as your seam reference, and avoid trimming those edges.
What are fabric precuts?
Precuts are fabric sold in ready-cut shapes, often bundled from a coordinated collection. They let you start with pieces suited to common quilting projects instead of cutting every piece from yardage. The familiar names describe typical shapes and sizes, but a bundle’s actual measurements and contents can vary.

How to choose a precut bundle
Match the fabric to the pattern, not just to the name on the package. Before buying, compare the pattern’s required shapes and dimensions with the bundle’s stated contents. If the pattern calls for a particular number of pieces, confirm that the bundle provides enough; counts and print selections vary.

- Shape and size: Look for the exact format or dimensions the pattern requires.
- Usable measurements: Account for pinked edges and the measurement convention used by the seller.
- Piece count and prints: Check how many pieces are included and whether the print mix suits the project.
- Preparation: Decide whether the project will use fabric prewashed or unwashed, and use a consistent approach across the quilt top.
AllPeopleQuilt’s precut project guide points readers toward options for strips, charm squares, layer cakes, and fat eighths. Treat those as project starting points and confirm the requirements of the specific pattern.
Should you prewash precut fabric?
There is no single preparation preference reflected in the cited guidance. AllPeopleQuilt advises against prewashing precuts because small cut pieces may ravel and shrink. Cotton and Joy’s author says they do not prewash; they consider fat quarters suitable for prewashing but advise against washing smaller pieces because they can fray and tangle. That author also recommends using the same preparation approach for all fabrics in one quilt top.

Choose based on your fabric, pattern, and preferred preparation method. If you prewash some fabrics, consider how the others in the quilt top will be prepared so the project is consistent. How to measure and handle precuts
- Keep the bundle closed until you are ready to use it. AllPeopleQuilt recommends this if you want to keep the collection together.
- Remove surface lint before opening. For a bundle with pinked edges, AllPeopleQuilt suggests rolling a lint roller over the top and bottom.
- Measure before you start cutting or sewing. Precut dimensions and measurement conventions can vary, so confirm that the pieces meet your pattern’s needs.
- Use the outermost pinked peaks as your reference. When aligning a pinked edge with a quarter-inch presser foot, use the peaks rather than the valleys, according to the guide’s video transcript.
- Press the fabric to relax the fibers and help it lie flat. Do this before piecing, while preserving the cut edge.
Should you trim pinked edges?
AllPeopleQuilt advises against trimming pinked edges. The zigzag cut is intended to help prevent raveling, and trimming it changes the precut’s dimensions. Instead, measure from the outermost peaks and follow the pattern’s seam allowance. If a pattern or project instruction specifically calls for a different edge treatment, follow that instruction while checking that the piece remains the required size.

How do you sew with a jelly roll?
A jelly roll is conventionally a bundle of 2.5-inch strips, though the actual contents should be checked. Those strips can be pieced into quilt designs or used for binding. Start with a pattern that specifies 2.5-inch strips, then verify the strip length and count in your bundle before planning the layout. Use the pinked peaks as your seam reference rather than cutting them off.
AllPeopleQuilt notes that precuts can also be mixed with other sizes when the project suits it. Keep the pattern’s measurements in view when combining formats, so the finished pieces still fit together as intended.
