If you want a bat motif in counted cross stitch, start with a chart that has a stitch grid and key—not just a bat-themed embroidery pattern. Clover Stitchery lists a free “Little Bat” cross-stitch PDF as an 80 × 73-stitch design using three DMC colors. Check the live listing and chart before gathering supplies, since its details are catalog information and the chart is the final authority.
Find a bat design in the right needlework format
“Embroidery” and “cross stitch” can describe different ways of stitching a motif. A counted cross-stitch chart uses a grid so you can count stitches on fabric; a surface-embroidery pattern may use other stitches and instructions. Confirm the format before downloading or buying a bat design.
A counted chart: Little Bat
Clover Stitchery’s free-pattern catalog lists “Little Bat” as a cross-stitch PDF, with a size of 80 × 73 stitches and three DMC colors. Those are the listing’s stated details, not an independent test. Review the current chart page and its key to confirm the dimensions, colors, fabric guidance, and any download conditions.

DMC bat designs are embroidery alternatives
DMC’s “Bats” is described as embroidery for clothing and accessories using Six-Strand Embroidery Floss. “Midnight Bat” is also described as embroidery, with Pearl Cotton. “Floral Bat” is presented for embroidery on cushion covers, totes, and linens. These offer bat-themed needlework options, but their product pages do not identify them as counted cross-stitch charts.
Compare charts before choosing one
Choose based on the kind of bat motif you want, then check practical details in the chart itself. A simple silhouette may suit a small project, while a more elaborate or floral motif may need more colors or stitching time; do not assume those requirements without checking the pattern.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gather supplies from the chart key
For a counted cross-stitch project, a beginner’s materials list commonly includes Aida fabric, six-strand embroidery floss, a blunt tapestry needle, a hoop, and small scissors. SketchValley describes 14-count Aida as an accessible fabric to see and count, but that is general beginner guidance—not a specification for every bat pattern. Check your chosen chart’s fabric count and instructions before purchasing.
- Read the chart key. Note the recommended fabric count, thread brand and color numbers, and any special instructions.
- Choose fabric to match the pattern. A different fabric count changes the finished dimensions. Do not assume 14-count Aida is required unless the chart says so.
- Match floss by the listed colors. Printed or on-screen color illustrations are approximations of actual thread shades, so use the chart’s color names or numbers when shopping.
- Prepare basic tools. Use a blunt tapestry needle and a hoop if they suit the fabric and project; keep small scissors nearby.
For general beginner guidance on materials and color matching, see SketchValley’s cross-stitch guide.
