On the Fly is a foundation-pieced dragonfly quilt project designed by Sue Beevers and published by American Patchwork & Quilting. Its individual blocks finish at 8 inches square; the complete quilt finishes at 67-1/2 inches square. The publisher’s page, dated June 14, 2013, links to the pattern and provides its materials and construction instructions: On the Fly – Sue Beevers 8" Block.
What “8-inch block” means
The 8-inch measurement is the finished size after the block is sewn into the quilt. The assembled block measures 8-1/2 inches square before it is joined to other pieces, allowing for the seam allowances. The complete quilt plan finishes at 67-1/2 inches square.
The pattern is a larger quilt project, not just a standalone block recipe: its layout uses 64 blocks in the center, with additional blocks for the outer border and corners.

How the block is made
This is foundation piecing, not conventional patchwork assembled without paper. The dragonfly design is built from foundation-pieced body, wing, and tail units. The instructions call for printing full-size foundations on printable foundation-piecing material or tracing them onto lightweight tracing paper. Fabric pieces are sewn to the numbered foundations in order; additions are trimmed and pressed as you work. Once the units are complete, remove the paper and assemble them into blocks.
- Print each full-size foundation pattern 64 times on printable foundation-piecing material, or trace the patterns onto lightweight tracing paper.
- Cut the fabric shapes specified by the pattern. Sew them to the numbered foundation sections in sequence, trimming and pressing after additions.
- Remove the paper foundations and assemble the body, wing, and tail units into blocks.
- For the full quilt, arrange the blocks in rows, then add the borders, quilt the layers, and bind the edges as directed.

Materials: one block versus the full quilt
The pattern specifies cotton prints in several colors, but the listed yardages are for the complete 67-1/2-inch quilt, not for one block. The source’s fabric quantities assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton and include 1/4-inch seam allowances. Use its cutting directions to determine how the prints are allocated to blocks and borders.
| Full-project material | Pattern quantity |
|---|---|
| Dark purple print | 3/4 yard |
| Blue leaf print | 2 yards |
| Pale blue print | 1-7/8 yards |
| Dark blue floral | 1 yard |
| Purple-and-green print | 2-3/4 yards |
| Green leaf print | 1/2 yard |
| Pale green print | 1-3/4 yards |
| Purple leaf print | 1/2 yard |
| Backing fabric | 4-1/8 yards |
| Batting | 74 inches square |
For a single block, the pattern’s essential technique supply is foundation paper or its named tracing-paper alternative, along with fabric cut according to that block’s foundation pieces. The published color names and prints describe the example quilt; the instructions do not establish a requirement to find the same print collection or a currently available brand.
