A “genie bottle” can mean a magical vessel in a story, but one of the best-documented real examples is a painted whiskey decanter used as Jeannie’s home in the sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. The Smithsonian says the prop was a 1964 Jim Beam Christmas-edition decanter painted by the show’s prop department—not an ancient artifact.
What is a genie bottle?
In popular culture, a genie bottle is a vessel associated with a genie—often shown as a place where the spirit is trapped or lives. The phrase can also describe decorative objects and themed collectibles. It does not identify one standard historical bottle type, and the objects discussed below have different origins and purposes.
Was Jeannie’s bottle in I Dream of Jeannie real?
Yes. The bottle was a physical production prop. The sitcom premiered on September 18, 1965, and ran for five seasons, ending in 1970. Its premise follows astronaut Tony Nelson, who discovers a genie trapped in a bottle after a crash landing in the South Pacific, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Each was a 1964 Jim Beam Christmas-edition whiskey decanter that the prop department painted. The Smithsonian’s March 28, 2024 release describes the selection this way: “Each bottle, in fact, was a 1964 Jim Beam Christmas edition whiskey decanter painted by the prop department that the show’s first director, Gene Nelson, saw as just the right bottle to serve as Jeannie’s home.” Barbara Eden received the bottle on the final day of shooting, and the Smithsonian documents its donation to the museum.

How the documented genie-themed objects differ
| Object | Role | Date and material | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeannie bottle | Television production prop | 1964; whiskey decanter, painted by the prop department | The Smithsonian identifies it as one of several bottles used on I Dream of Jeannie and records Barbara Eden’s donation. Smithsonian release and collection record. |
| Aladdin thermos | Themed consumer object, not a sitcom prop | 1993; plastic | The Smithsonian collection record describes a thermos decorated with cartoon images of Disney’s Genie. Smithsonian collection record. |
Are genie bottles based on historical containers?
The cited museum sources document a television prop and a themed thermos; they do not establish a historical tradition of bottles used to contain genies. For example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s discussion of Chinese snuff bottles concerns containers for snuff and their artistic and social roles, not genie lore. That is a separate history, despite the shared word “bottle.” See the Met’s account of Chinese snuff bottles.

The Jeannie prop and the Aladdin thermos show that genie imagery appears on real objects, but museum records do not verify current retail stock, licensing, or the authenticity of any particular online listing. Treat a product described as a “genie bottle” as a specific item to assess—not as an automatically authentic replica or historical artifact. The Smithsonian’s collection records document the objects; they do not offer or endorse replicas.
