A recreational landing net helps lift a hooked fish out of the water; a capture net is used to catch fish and may be subject to local rules. For catch-and-release, NOAA recommends a wet, soft knotless or rubber landing net, but careful handling and limited time out of the water still matter.
What does “fishing net” mean?
The term covers different equipment. Anglers commonly use a landing net to bring a fish under control after hooking it. A dip net can also be used to handle fish. Commercial and other capture gear—including gillnets, seines, surrounding nets, and trawls—is designed to catch fish, not simply land one already hooked. The equipment and applicable rules differ by purpose and location. Fish.gov.au’s overview of commercial fishing methods describes several capture-net types.
What kind of landing net should you use?
For catch-and-release, prioritize fish-friendly mesh, then choose a frame, bag, and handle that suit the fish and where you are fishing. NOAA Fisheries recommends wet, soft knotless mesh or rubber nets. Its National Marine Sanctuaries guidance specifically recommends a knotless rubber net with large mesh to help reduce fin fraying, mucus loss, and skin abrasions. A net does not guarantee a fish will survive release; minimize handling and air exposure as well. NOAA Fisheries’ catch-and-release guidance covers handling practices.
Mesh: rubber or soft knotless
Rubber and soft knotless mesh are the evidence-supported choices for reducing harm compared with knotted mesh. Ontario’s catch-and-release guidance summarizes a 2003 study of bluegill: over 168 hours after capture, mortality was zero among fish landed without a net and 4–14% among fish landed with a net. In comparisons among the net types studied, knotted mesh caused more injury and mortality than rubber or knotless mesh. These are findings for that study’s species and conditions, not a mortality rate that applies to all fish or nets. Ontario’s fish-handling guidance summarizes the study.

Frame, bag, and handle
The frame opening and bag should be large enough for the fish and the task, while the handle should reach the water from your fishing position without making the net unwieldy. A bank, a boat, and a confined spot may call for different reach and portability trade-offs. FAO identifies the bag, frame, and handle as a dip net’s core parts and advises matching shape and size to the task. Its dimensions and shallow-bag advice concern live fish handling in aquaculture; they are not a universal size chart for recreational anglers. FAO’s dip-net guidance gives that aquaculture context.
Durability and materials
Consider the net’s construction, expected abrasion, exposure to sunlight, storage, and how easy it is to carry and maneuver. Material behavior is only one factor in performance. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, discussing fisheries sampling gear, says nylon stretches and loses 10–15% of its strength when wet, while polyethylene floats and is vulnerable to UV damage. How to land and release a fish with less handling
- Prepare the net before bringing the fish alongside. Check that the handle is secure and the mesh is wettable and ready, so the fish spends less time under control at the surface.
- Keep the fight controlled. NOAA Fisheries advises, “Never fight a fish to exhaustion.”
- Use the net gently. Avoid dragging or squeezing the fish against the mesh, and keep it in the water as much as practical.
- Release promptly. Limit handling and air exposure; the net choice alone cannot ensure survival.
Are capture nets the same as landing nets?
No. Gillnets and entanglement nets, surrounding nets, seines, and trawls are capture gear. Mesh size can help determine the size range of fish caught. Rules may vary by location, fishery, and target species; NOAA notes that gillnet dimensions and mesh rules are not uniform. Check current local regulations before using a net to catch fish.
