Christmas Day in 2024 fell on Wednesday, December 25. For U.S. retail context, the National Retail Federation (NRF) counted the holiday shopping season as November 1 through December 31; that measure is separate from Christmas Day and does not describe how people observed the holiday.
When was Christmas Day in 2024?
Christmas Day was Wednesday, December 25, 2024, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s federal holiday schedule. That calendar date is distinct from the broader period retailers use to report seasonal sales.
What did U.S. holiday retail sales show?
NRF defines its holiday retail season as November 1 through December 31. Its core retail-sales measure excludes automobile dealers, gasoline stations, and restaurants, and is not adjusted for inflation. NRF says its calculation is based on Census Bureau data.

| Snapshot | Publication date | Sales period | NRF figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forecast | October 2024 | November and December 2024 | Growth of 2.5% to 3.5%; $979.5 billion to $989 billion |
| Reported result | January 2025 | November and December 2024, compared with 2023 | Growth of 4%; $994.1 billion |
The January result exceeded the range NRF had projected in October. The two figures are estimates published at different points in time—one forecast before the season and one reported after it—not competing measures of Christmas participation or total household spending. See NRF’s October 2024 forecast and January 2025 reported result.
How did the shopping calendar compare with 2023?
NRF said the interval between Thanksgiving and Christmas was five days shorter in 2024 than in 2023. That calendar difference is useful context for the retail season, but it does not by itself explain the reported sales result.

What the retail figures do—and do not—say
These figures describe a defined slice of U.S. retail sales across November and December. They should not be read as a measure of religious observance, how many people celebrated Christmas, household budgets, or consumer welfare. Nor do they describe retail activity outside the United States or every kind of Christmas observance.
The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 winter holiday facts page includes Christmas decorations in its trade-statistics material. That establishes seasonal décor as a relevant retail category, not a particular ornament or decoration as a bestseller or recommendation.
