Lord Vitthal—also known as Vithoba or Pandurang—is a deity worshipped at the Shri Vitthal-Rukmini temple in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. The town, the temple beside the Chandrabhaga River and the foot pilgrimage known as the wari are at the heart of Vitthal devotion, particularly in the Varkari tradition.
Who is Lord Vitthal?
Vitthal is worshipped as a form of Vishnu or Krishna. Vithoba and Pandurang are widely associated names; other names recorded in local sources include Pandhari, Vithal and Vithalnath. Usage can vary, so these names are best understood as connected to the deity rather than assumed to be used identically by every devotee or community. Why is Pandharpur important to Vitthal worship?

What is the Pandharpur wari?
The wari, also called vari, is a pilgrimage on foot to the Vitthal temple at Pandharpur. Pilgrims walk together, chanting Vitthal’s name, singing abhangs—devotional poems—and reading the Haripath, a devotional text. The temple describes groups or processions known as dindi as part of this pilgrimage. The practice makes devotion something shared through walking, singing and prayer, not only worship at the shrine. When do devotees gather, and what happens at the temple?
