Three Journeys has ended. The WA Museum Boola Bardip exhibition ran in Perth/Booroo from 18 November 2023 to 4 February 2024, bringing together three travelling exhibitions built around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytelling. In a January 2024 review, Amanda and Sarria found it richly interactive and, at moments, moving; they spent about an hour and a half inside and still missed a separate VR experience.
What Three Journeys brought together
The exhibition framed storytelling across film, television, music, art and interactive media, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and perspectives at its centre. Its three components approached that theme in distinct ways: mechanical ingenuity and humour, screen-based speculative storytelling, and a car transformed into a musical work.

#1 Best Overall
Bush Mechanics
Bush Mechanics explored resourcefulness and ingenuity through original cars, clay figurines, commissioned artwork and interactive displays. The museum’s school-visit material also describes a digital activity in which visitors decorated a virtual old car and watched it travel across a desert landscape.
Cleverman
Cleverman drew on the ABC science-fiction television series through video, audio, objects, props, costumes and makeup. Rather than treating the show only as a screen experience, the installation invited visitors to encounter its storytelling through different kinds of material and media.

Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool
Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool turned an old car into a sonic sculpture and musical instrument. The work carries stories from Warmun community members and could be heard as well as viewed. Tura’s archive attributes its production to a collaboration with Warmun Art Centre, Warmun Community Inc and Ngalangangpum School; that specific attribution belongs to this work, not to every part of Three Journeys.
The museum’s school-visit page gives further detail on the digital car activity and the stories within Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool. Tura’s project archive records the work’s collaborators.

Was it interactive and emotional?
For reviewers Amanda and Sarria, interactivity and emotion were both part of the visit. Their PerthNow review, published 30 January 2024, says Bush Mechanics made an effective opening, with a looping animation and an interactive gear stick. In the Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool space, projected performance footage accompanied the sound of didgeridoo and percussion; one reviewer says the experience moved them emotionally.
They also found plenty to watch and listen to in the Cleverman area. The reviewers appreciated the audio guidance, which let them move at their own pace, and singled out clay animation, projected music and a video of artists explaining the work. Both gave the exhibition four stars. Those ratings and emotional responses are Amanda and Sarria’s personal assessment, not a measure of visitor opinion as a whole.

How much time did the visit take?
Amanda and Sarria spent about an hour and a half in Three Journeys and did not have time for Collisions, a separate experience elsewhere in the extended program. Their account suggests allowing more than an hour if you want to listen, watch and try the interactive elements rather than moving quickly through the rooms.
Collisions was not a fourth component or a requirement for seeing the exhibition. The museum described it as a 22-minute VR film; its historical guidance said the headset was not recommended for children aged 12 and under, who could attend and see the experience in 2D. The museum’s Collisions page concerns that separate program item.

Access information recorded for the past exhibition
The museum held a Quiet Hour: Three Journeys session in January 2024. Its listing described reduced crowds, interactives turned down where possible, a designated quiet area and a sensory map. This was a past session, not an ongoing offer. The museum’s school-visit information also advised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples that the exhibition might contain names, images and voices of people who had passed away.
Details of the historical Quiet Hour are on the museum’s event page. For the notice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors, see the school-visit information.
Who might have enjoyed it?
In retrospect, the three-part format offered several ways into the exhibition: Bush Mechanics for hands-on displays and inventive vehicles, Cleverman for television and screen storytelling, and Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool for sound, performance and a work rooted in Warmun community stories. The reviewers’ account is especially positive about taking time with the audio and audiovisual elements. Since the exhibition has finished, this is a guide to what visitors encountered, not a recommendation for a currently available visit.
