A “Hope Tree” can mean several different things: a hospice creative-writing project, a memorial installation at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, a counselling service in East Kent, or a community craft where people paint encouraging messages on wooden stars. These are separate projects, not one shared organization. If you mean the hands-on painting activity, you can make a version with permission to use a community tree; if you mean a specific service or installation, its location and purpose matter.
What “Hope Tree” can refer to
The name is used for distinct projects. The table separates them by purpose so you can find the one relevant to your question.

The Edinburgh Hope Tree: a memorial option
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s Hope Tree stands in its John Hope Gateway and is named for John Hope, Regius Keeper from 1761 to 1786. The garden invites people to sponsor an engraved leaf in memory of someone or to mark an event. Sponsorship is described as in perpetuity, and sponsors receive a bespoke certificate. The garden estimates about 12 weeks from ordering to public display; confirm the current process with the garden before ordering. The garden’s page lists four tiers, with prices stated as current in April 2024 and subject to regular review:

The hospice Hope Tree: a creative expression activity
A 2018 article in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine describes a Hope Tree used in a hospice setting. Participants’ expressed hopes were collected and independently coded by the research team. The abstract reports eight themes: “Peace,” “Dreams,” “Total well-being,” “Acknowledgment of loss,” “Relationships,” “Hospice care,” “Spirituality,” and “Dichotomies.” Its authors present the tree as a creative art project for expressing hope among family members and health-care professionals. Hope Tree Counselling in East Kent
Hope Tree Counselling and Consultancy Service CIC is a separate service, not a memorial tree or painting project. Its website describes support for children and young people in school and community settings in East Kent, including those facing difficult transitions, alongside counselling, advice and training for families. The service says it was set up in Ashford in 2015. For current eligibility, availability or referral arrangements, contact the service through its website.
Doane House Hospice’s Hope Tree Initiative
Doane House Hospice uses “Hope Tree Initiative” for a social-networking program that connects people affected by cancer so they can share stories of hope and healing. Its page also describes “Picture This,” an art-print initiative that helps sustain its art-therapy program. This is a hospice program, distinct from the Edinburgh memorial and the painted-star craft. How to make a painted-message Hope Tree
If you mean the community craft, Stars of HOPE USA’s guide uses painted wooden stars rather than painted leaves. It asks participants to make encouraging messages, protect the dried paint with polyurethane, attach ribbon and hang the stars on a community tree only after getting permission. The guide refers to the organization’s “Box of HOPE”; it does not establish that any particular retail product is required.
- Choose a suitable place and get permission. Ask the property owner or responsible organization before attaching anything to a tree. Agree on timing, attachment method and removal or maintenance responsibilities.
- Prepare the stars. Use paintable wooden star shapes, with paints and brushes appropriate to the surface. Follow the Stars of HOPE guide if you are using its activity format.
- Paint a brief, supportive message. Keep messages considerate and appropriate for the people who will see them. Let the paint dry fully.
- Protect and hang the stars. The guide recommends applying polyurethane after the paint dries, attaching ribbon, and hanging the finished stars only at the approved location.
For this craft, the tree is a temporary community display, not the same thing as the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s permanent memorial installation or a hospice research activity.
