Ramadan 2025 began on different dates in different countries: Egypt and Saudi Arabia announced Saturday, March 1, as the first day, while Morocco announced Sunday, March 2. The Islamic month follows local crescent-sighting decisions, so neither date should be treated as universal. Exact daily fasting times also depend on where you are.
When did Ramadan 2025 start?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, so its dates shift against the Gregorian calendar from year to year. For 1446 AH, authorities in these countries announced different first days:

These dates reflect the decisions of the authorities named, not a single worldwide calendar. Muslim communities may follow local crescent sightings, a nearby country, Saudi Arabia, or another authority or method.

When was Eid al-Fitr 2025?
Eid al-Fitr follows the end of Ramadan, but its Gregorian date also depends on the local decision about the next crescent. The UK NHS Muslim Network’s guidance gives one conditional scenario: if Ramadan began March 1 and lasted 30 days, March 31 was the final fasting day and Eid al-Fitr was April 1. That is a scenario, not a universal date for every country or community.
What do suhoor and iftar mean?
- Suhoor is the meal eaten before dawn.
- Iftar is the meal at sunset that breaks the fast.
Muslims fast from dawn until sunset during Ramadan. The World Health Organization’s 2025 regional campaign describes abstaining during the fasting period from eating, drinking, smoking and vaping. The start and end of each day’s fast vary with date and location; a month-start date alone cannot tell you the timetable for your city. Use a local mosque or relevant local authority for daily prayer and fasting times.

Can you fast during Ramadan if you have diabetes?
Whether fasting is safe for someone with diabetes depends on individual health and risk. The WHO advises discussing a safe plan or alternatives with a doctor before Ramadan. Its general guidance includes regular blood-sugar checks, healthier food choices at iftar, regular water intake outside fasting hours, and sensible exercise. Do not change medication dosing based on general advice; discuss fasting and medication with your clinician. Decisions about fasting during pregnancy also need individual advice from a healthcare provider.
