Happy Dhanteras! Also called Dhan Trayodashi, this festival marks the opening of the Diwali celebration sequence. May the day bring you and your loved ones health, happiness and prosperity.
What is Dhanteras?
Dhanteras is also known as Dhan Trayodashi; Akashvani also calls it Dhanvantri Jayanti. The Press Information Bureau describes Deepavali as a five-day celebration that begins with Dhanteras, a day associated with auspicious beginnings. Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism site, likewise presents it as the first day of Diwali.
These are broad descriptions of the festival sequence, not a universal ritual schedule. Observances and calendars can differ by region and tradition.

Purchases associated with prosperity
Buying metalware, household essentials, utensils, or gold and silver is a customary way some families mark the day. The Press Information Bureau describes new metalware or essentials as symbols of prosperity. Akashvani’s October 18, 2025 report also mentions gold and silver articles, utensils, appliances and automobiles among purchases people make. These are customs, not requirements for celebrating Dhanteras.

Worship and festive preparations
Akashvani’s report names Dhanvantari, Kuber and Lakshmi among the deities worshipped on Dhanteras. Some households also prepare for Diwali by lighting clay diyas or traditional oil lamps; the details and timing of observances vary.
When is Dhanteras in 2026?
Dhanteras falls on November 6, 2026, in Drik Panchang’s listing for New Delhi. That calendar gives a New Delhi puja window of 6:02 p.m. to 7:57 p.m. local time. It lists different timings for other cities, so check a location-specific panchang for the date and observance window where you live rather than treating New Delhi’s timing as nationwide.

A simple greeting is enough: “Happy Dhanteras! Wishing you and your family health, happiness and prosperity.” You can also offer wishes for a peaceful and joyful Diwali season.
