Vinayaka Chaturthi—also called Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi—is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha. In 2026, official Indian calendars list it on Monday, 14 September. The observance is widely described as a ten-day celebration, but how long families keep an idol and which customs they follow can vary by region and household.
What is Vinayaka Chaturthi?
The festival honors the birth of Lord Ganesha. The Incredible India festival page, attributed to Maharashtra Tourism, uses the names Ganesh Chaturthi, Vinayaka Chaturthi and Vinayaka Chavithi for the occasion. Incredible India’s festival overview describes the celebration as beginning on Chaturthi, the fourth day of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.
When is Vinayaka Chaturthi in 2026?
India’s National Portal, the India Meteorological Department’s Rashtriya Panchanga, and the Controller of Communication Accounts, Andhra Pradesh, list the 2026 observance on Monday, 14 September. The National Portal of India calendar labels its entry a restricted holiday; that central-calendar designation does not establish how every state, workplace, or community observes the date.

Because it follows the Hindu lunar calendar, its Gregorian date changes from year to year; 14 September is the listed date for 2026, not a fixed annual date. The date is also listed in the India Meteorological Department’s Rashtriya Panchanga and the Andhra Pradesh Controller of Communication Accounts holiday list.

How is the festival celebrated?
Practices differ, but official tourism accounts describe several common parts of the observance:
- Home worship: Devotees may install a specially crafted Ganesha idol at home.
- Aarti: Devotional worship includes aartis dedicated to Ganesha.
- Modak: This sweet is among the foods associated with the festival.
- Procession and immersion: In public celebrations, an idol may be carried in a procession with music, dance and chanting before immersion in a nearby water body. The immersion is known as Ganesh Visarjan.

How long does the observance last?
Ten days is a widely used description of the festival, but household observances can be shorter or longer. Goa Tourism’s account notes that some families keep the idol for one and a half days, while others observe for five, seven, nine, eleven or more days. The duration is therefore not uniform across families and regions.
Choosing an idol for home worship
For a household planning to install an idol, material and immersion arrangements are practical considerations to discuss with family members or local religious and community guides. Official tourism descriptions establish that specially crafted idols are used, but do not prescribe one material for every observance. Do not assume that clay is mandatory based on those descriptions alone; seek locally relevant guidance on the idol and its immersion.
