Tangyuan are round dumplings made from glutinous rice, and they are a fitting subject for a Winter Solstice illustration—especially when the scene is grounded in a specific place. Shanghai sources document eating tangyuan for the festival; Taiwanese records add distinct visual details and customs. These traditions are not universal across China: the Shanghai Municipal Government also describes northern Chinese communities as eating a different kind of dumpling.
What are tangyuan?
Tangyuan (湯圓) are small, round dumplings made from glutinous rice. The Shanghai Municipal Government describes its local Winter Solstice version as stuffed and made from glutinous rice flour. They can anchor an illustration as a bowl of smooth, round forms, but details such as color, filling, and accompanying ritual should be tied to the community being depicted.
For the Shanghai custom and its distinction from northern Chinese dumplings, see the Shanghai Municipal Government’s Winter Solstice explainer.

Why are tangyuan associated with Winter Solstice?
Eating tangyuan at Winter Solstice is documented in Shanghai and Taiwan, though the practice varies by region. A Taipei City tourism handout presents tangyuan as a symbol of growing a year older and as a prayer for reunion and completeness. That is the interpretation reported by that source, not a single meaning that should be assigned to every community.
#1 Best Overall
- Time-tested method for creating restaurant-style dishes at home, including dumplings, veggies, and fish
- Two tiers to cook several dishes or servings at a time
- So simple to use: place in a pan of water and heat
- Made with traditional bamboo, which is also a renewable resource
- Dimensions: 10.00 in L x 10.00 in W x 6.00 in H
The Shanghai government’s account distinguishes this custom from northern Chinese dumplings, so an illustration should not present tangyuan as the food eaten everywhere for the festival.
Place-specific details to include in an illustration
Shanghai: a bowl of tangyuan
A bowl of round tangyuan is a source-supported starting point for a Shanghai Winter Solstice scene. The government account identifies the dumplings as stuffed and made from glutinous rice flour. Avoid adding Taiwanese ritual details unless the illustration intentionally combines or compares traditions.

Taiwan: making tangyuan and household observances
The National Taiwan Museum catalogs Huang Jintian’s folk painting 《冬至》 as depicting people making tangyuan. Its record estimates the work dates to 1999–2004, identifies paper as the medium, and gives Nantou as its place of manufacture. The museum’s image is marked “viewing only,” so check reproduction permissions before using the artwork itself as an image asset. The catalog is available at National Taiwan Museum: 《冬至》.
A separate National Taiwan Museum record documents 餉耗, a local practice in which tangyuan may be affixed to household objects after Winter Solstice observances, with associations of blessing and thanksgiving. Treat this as a specific recorded custom, not a standard practice across Taiwan or Chinese communities. See National Taiwan Museum: 《祭冬餉秏》.

How to keep the image culturally clear
- Name the place or community the scene represents, such as Shanghai or Taiwan.
- Use the round shape of tangyuan as the visual anchor; add color, filling, or ritual details only when they fit the chosen local context.
- Do not label all Chinese Winter Solstice dumplings as tangyuan. Shanghai’s account distinguishes its tangyuan custom from northern Chinese dumplings.
- If referencing Huang Jintian’s painting, distinguish inspiration from reproduction and check the museum’s viewing-only rights notice.
