PhotoFlare CE is a free, open-source desktop image editor for straightforward image adjustments, painting and retouching tools, filters, and batch processing. It is distinct from PhotoFlare Lens, which develops RAW photos, and PhotoFlare Studio, the commercial layered editor. This distinction matters: features described for Lens or Studio should not be assumed to be part of CE.
What is PhotoFlare CE?
PhotoFlare CE is the project’s free, GPL-licensed desktop editor. The project describes PhotoFlare as cross-platform and says it was “Built from the ground up to be cross-platform and highly performant.” That is the project’s own description, not an independent performance assessment. The official downloads page presents CE as a quick, simple editor with basic tools, filters, and batch-processing features; the project also publishes its source code on GitHub.

For painters, illustrators, and other image-makers, CE is best understood as a utility editor for tasks such as cropping or selecting parts of an image, touching up pixels, adjusting colour and tone, and applying the same kinds of changes to multiple files. Its documented toolset is practical rather than a claim to a full professional painting or layered-compositing workflow.
What can you do with PhotoFlare CE?
Select, crop, and prepare an image
The official tool documentation describes selection tools, including a magic wand, for working on parts of an image. Image sizing supports a lock-ratio option, useful when changing dimensions without unintentionally distorting the image. Paint, fill, and retouch pixels
Documented CE tools include paint brushes, a paint bucket, colour picker, clone stamp, blur, eraser, and smudge. These can support small corrections, simple painted marks, filling areas, sampling a colour from the image, or softening and removing details. The documentation establishes the available tools, but does not by itself establish advanced layer-based painting capabilities.
Adjust colour and apply filters
PhotoFlare CE includes filters and image adjustments. Its batch-processing documentation lists brightness, contrast, saturation, and gamma correction, as well as filters, among the operations that can be applied to groups of images.

How does PhotoFlare batch processing work?
Batch processing is the CE feature for applying a supported operation to multiple images instead of repeating it file by file. The official batch-processing documentation lists resizing and canvas sizing, brightness, contrast, saturation, gamma correction, filters, rotation, and flipping.

- Use it for consistent sets: for example, preparing a group of images at a common size or applying the same tonal adjustment.
- Choose operations carefully: rotation, flipping, filters, and tonal changes affect the image content, while resizing and canvas sizing address different dimensions of the output.
- Check the output: the documentation lists supported operations but does not establish that every operation is reversible or that a batch can be safely treated as a substitute for keeping originals.
For painting-related workflows, batch operations are most useful for preparing reference images, exporting consistently sized artwork, or making repeatable adjustments across a set. They are separate from detailed, image-by-image brushwork.

| Product | Purpose | Editing depth and notable features | Commercial model |
|---|---|---|---|
| PhotoFlare CE | General desktop editing and batch work | Basic tools, filters, adjustments, and batch operations; no layered-editing feature is established in the cited CE materials. | Free and GPL-licensed. |
| PhotoFlare Lens | RAW photo development | RAW-focused workflow. The project homepage claims support for RAW files from “700+ camera models”; this is a vendor claim scoped to Lens, not CE. | Not stated on the cited homepage. |
| PhotoFlare Studio | More advanced image editing | Layered editing, advanced brushes, and tablet pressure and tilt support, according to the official Studio page. | Commercial. The page lists v2.0.0-Beta and a one-time €79 license; these are vendor-listed details and may change. |
Studio’s pressure- and tilt-sensitive brush support may matter to artists using a compatible graphics tablet, but the cited page does not verify compatibility for particular tablet models. A tablet is not documented as a requirement for CE.
How do you install PhotoFlare?
For ordinary use, start at the official downloads page, which is the project’s user-facing route for CE downloads. The repository’s build instructions are for compiling from source, not a prerequisite for using a supplied installer.
If you intend to build from source, the repository documents dependencies including a C++ compiler, GraphicsMagick++ development libraries, OpenMP, libc, and Qt 6 components, with Ubuntu package examples. Those details belong to a developer build setup and should not be mistaken for consumer installation requirements. Consult the project’s repository build instructions for the current steps and platform-specific details.
Is PhotoFlare a good fit for a painting workflow?
PhotoFlare CE is a reasonable fit when the need is modest image preparation or pixel-level cleanup: selecting and cropping, painting small changes, cloning or blurring details, adjusting colour, applying filters, or processing a group of files. Its official documentation supports those tasks and names concrete tools and batch operations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose based on the work required, not the shared PhotoFlare name. The cited CE materials do not establish layers or Studio’s advanced tablet-aware brushes for the free editor; RAW development belongs to Lens, while layered editing and pressure/tilt brush features are described for Studio. If layered illustration or a RAW workflow is central, verify the specific product’s features before building a workflow around CE.
