For a free arrow graphic in PNG format, start with OpenMoji or SVG Repo: both offer arrow assets with downloadable PNG options. The right file depends on the arrow’s direction, appearance, color, background, and size. Check the individual asset preview and license before using it, especially in a painting or other work you plan to share or sell.

How to choose the right arrow for a painting
Before downloading, compare the arrow’s direction, shape, line weight, style, and color with the composition. A bold, simple arrow may read clearly in a diagram or guide, while a decorative arrow may better suit an illustrated piece. If you need a particular color, inspect the preview rather than assuming the collection includes it.
- Background: Check that the PNG has transparency if you want the painting to show through around the arrow. A preview alone may not establish what the downloaded file’s background contains.
- Dimensions: Choose a raster size suited to the final placement. Enlarging a small PNG can make its edges look soft; use the SVG when you need to edit or scale a vector graphic, if the asset provides one.
- Fit: Try the image in the intended layout and at its final display size. Confirm that the arrow remains legible and does not compete with the painted subject.
Check the license before reusing an arrow
A free download does not automatically mean unrestricted reuse. Licenses vary by source and by individual asset. The reviewed examples include a Wikimedia file with a public-domain dedication, an OpenMoji arrow under CC BY-SA 4.0, and an SVG Repo listing labeled CC0.

Before you use the downloaded PNG
- Open the specific asset page and confirm that its direction, style, and color suit the design.
- Check the offered format and dimensions; download the SVG as well if you need scalable editing and it is available.
- Open the downloaded PNG in your image editor to verify its pixel dimensions and whether the background is actually transparent.
- Read the asset’s license and follow any attribution or share-alike conditions that apply to your planned use.
