To draw a border on an A4 sheet, choose how far in from each edge it should sit, mark those distances with a ruler, then join the marks with straight lines. A4 paper measures 210 × 297 mm. If you plan to print a digital border, make sure both the document and print dialog are set to A4, and keep the lines inside your printer’s printable area.
How to draw a border by hand
- Choose the inset. Decide whether you want an even frame on all four sides or more room on one side for binding, notes, or a painted design.
- Mark the edges. Use a metric ruler or scale and pencil to measure the chosen distance in from each corner. Add marks between the corners if they will help you draw a straighter line. A government vocational dress-making exercise uses 2.5 cm on one side and 1 cm at the top, right, and bottom; those are that exercise’s example measurements, not a universal A4 requirement. - Join the marks. Align a ruler between corresponding marks and draw each side lightly. Check that opposite margins are consistent, then darken the lines if desired.
A metric ruler and pencil are optional tools for the hand-drawn method. The cited exercise uses a scale and pencil; it does not prescribe a particular ruler length or brand.
Choose a border inset for its purpose

- Open the Design tab and select Page Borders.
- Choose the border options you want and inspect the preview to check how the frame sits around the page.
- Before printing, confirm that the document’s paper size is A4 and check the print dialog’s paper-size setting too.
Microsoft Support says, “The usual reason borders don’t print is something called your ‘printer’s minimum margin setting.’” If a Word border is clipped or missing, increase the corresponding page margin to move it farther from the paper edge, and check the printer maker’s minimum-margin guidance. Keep a printed border the right size
A4 is 210 × 297 mm. If your template depends on exact dimensions, select 100% or Actual size in the print settings so scaling does not change its geometry. Check that the document and print dialog both specify A4; a paper-size mismatch or scaling setting can alter the layout. A4 printable ruled-paper guidance
Correct sizing does not guarantee that a line near the edge will print. Printers have model- and driver-dependent printable areas, and Canon cautions that its printable-area illustration is only a reference because actual margins can vary. Leave the border comfortably inside the paper edge and consult guidance for your printer model rather than relying on a universal safe inset. Canon printable-area guidance
