How Pottery Is Made: An Ancient Craft of Shaping Clay

Pottery turns prepared clay into durable objects through shaping, gradual drying, optional decoration, and firing. The methods and materials vary across traditions.

Pottery is made by preparing clay, shaping it, drying it, and firing it until it becomes a durable ceramic object. A potter may also trim, smooth, decorate, or glaze the piece; neither a wheel nor glaze is essential. The craft is both practical and artistic: it turns workable earth materials into objects for use, decoration, and study.

How is pottery made?

The details vary with the clay, the desired form, and the potter’s tradition, but the basic sequence is preparation, forming, drying, optional surface work, and firing.

  1. Prepare the clay. Clay becomes workable when mixed with water. Depending on the material and intended result, potters may add non-plastic temper to reduce shrinkage and cracking, or fluxing ingredients that lower the firing temperature. Preparation is not identical for every clay body.
  2. Shape the object. Potters can pinch clay by hand, build forms from coils, use a wheel, or shape clay in a mould. The method depends on the form, material, and tradition.
  3. Let it dry gradually. As water evaporates, the clay stiffens. Careless drying can lead to shrinkage cracks, according to the National Park Service’s Museum Handbook, Appendix P. At the leather-hard stage, a piece holds its shape but can still be smoothed or worked.
  4. Finish or decorate it. Trimming, smoothing, burnishing, painting, and applying slip or glaze are all possibilities. Some pottery is left unglazed.
  5. Fire the piece. A kiln heats the ceramic and, in many cases, controls the oxygen conditions around it. Firing brings lasting physical and chemical change. Some pieces are fired once; many glazed pieces receive an initial firing followed by a separate glaze firing. The suitable temperature depends on the clay body, glaze, kiln, and intended result.

How can you shape clay without a wheel?

Hand-building means forming an object without a potter’s wheel. Two common approaches are pinching and coiling: pinch a lump into shape with your fingers, or join coils of clay to build a form. Moulding is another option. UCL’s Digital Egypt account of Egyptian pottery production documents these methods alongside tool-assisted hand-making and wheel use. A wheel is one technique among several, not a requirement for making pottery.

Why does pottery need to dry before firing?

Drying allows water to leave the clay and the form to become more rigid before it is fired. If a piece dries carelessly, uneven shrinkage can cause cracks. Gradual drying also gives the maker time to work the clay at different stages: leather-hard clay, for example, is firm enough to hold its form but still workable for smoothing and other finishing.

What happens when pottery is fired?

Firing is more than drying by heat. A kiln changes the physical and chemical structure of the ceramic material. The National Park Service describes the result as fusing the material into a rock-like form in its Museum Handbook. Kiln atmosphere matters in some processes as well as temperature: ancient Greek potters used a three-stage cycle of oxidizing, reducing, then re-oxidizing conditions to create black gloss against the clay body, as described by the University of Colorado Boulder. That is a historical technique, not a general firing recipe.

Firing temperatures are not interchangeable rules. The National Park Service handbook gives 800–1400°C as a range for many archaeological ceramics; the Musée national Adrien Dubouché gives around 900°C for an example biscuit firing and 1400°C for hard-paste porcelain. These figures describe different contexts, not a universal temperature for pottery.

What is the difference between pottery and ceramics?

“Pottery” commonly refers to objects shaped from clay and fired. “Ceramics” can be broader, covering fired inorganic materials beyond everyday clay vessels. Institutions also group ceramic types differently: the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka notes that classification criteria vary among Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Western contexts. The labels are useful, but they do not have one universally fixed definition.

Earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain: how do they differ?

These are broad ceramic categories, often distinguished by body composition, firing, and the resulting density or porosity. Their exact boundaries depend on the classification system, so the labels should not be treated as universal technical specifications.

Category What the label tells you What it does not establish by itself
Earthenware A broad family of pottery recognized in Western classification. A single universal composition, firing temperature, or degree of porosity; criteria vary by region.
Stoneware A broad ceramic family often compared with earthenware and porcelain. A universal performance threshold or fixed firing range; definitions depend on the classification used.
Porcelain A distinct ceramic family; the Musée national Adrien Dubouché describes hard-paste porcelain fired at 1400°C as an example. That every porcelain body uses the same recipe or firing schedule.

The Musée national Adrien Dubouché’s guide uses four broad families—pottery, faience, stoneware, and porcelain—and describes an example process in which biscuit-fired ware is glazed. Those categories and temperatures belong to its account, not to every regional tradition or workshop.

How old is pottery?

Pottery has a long history, but there is no single origin date that describes every region. The American Ceramic Society says clay-based ceramics became popular around 9000 BCE as settled agricultural communities developed, and describes their use for containers, art objects, tiles, and bricks, with use spreading from Asia to the Middle East and Europe (“A Brief History of Ceramics and Glass”). This is a broad historical account, not a claim that pottery began everywhere at the same time.

Regional evidence shows how varied production could be. UCL’s Digital Egypt account identifies Nile silt and marl as Egyptian pottery materials and describes pinching, coiling, moulding, and other forming methods. Its timeline places wheel use in Egypt in the Fifth Dynasty, around 2400 BCE; that date is specific to its Egyptian chronology, not a universal date for the invention of the pottery wheel. The University of Colorado Boulder describes pottery production in the Near East around the emergence of permanent settlements and says it was established by the fifth millennium BCE.

What makes pottery an art as well as a practical craft?

Making pottery combines decisions about form and material with choices about surface and finish. A vessel’s shape may serve a practical purpose, while its proportions, texture, decoration, or glaze give it a distinct visual character. The process also preserves evidence of the materials and techniques used in particular places and periods. Pottery can therefore be both an object made for use and a record of human skill and culture.
