For intricate paper snowflakes, keep the folded layers aligned, cut the small interior details first, and leave enough paper to support every narrow section. Follow the folding sequence printed with your chosen pattern: templates differ, so there is no single fold that works for all designs.
Choose a pattern and match its folds
A printed template gives you a clear guide for where to fold and cut; freehand designs let you decide the details. In either case, use a pattern made for the shape of paper you are starting with, and follow its marked folds in order.
- The Natural History Museum’s animal snowflake templates start with a diagonal fold and continue through marked folds. They include ten animal and nature-inspired designs, such as a polar bear, dodo, elephant, hummingbird, squid, stegosaurus, tarantula, T. rex, whale, and volcano.
- NASA’s Webb Mirror Paper Snowflake Activity provides its own printable template and folding sheet for a design inspired by the Webb telescope’s segmented primary mirror.
- IceCube’s science-themed patterns include detector and laboratory designs, with four-sided and six-sided versions for several motifs.
- DiSC Profile’s templates are offered at simpler, medium, and complex levels.
These sources do not use a shared difficulty scale. When choosing, consider how many folds and layers the pattern calls for, how much fine interior cutting it has, and how much paper remains to hold the finished shape together.

Gather paper and cutting tools
Set up on a flat surface with the template, a ruler, and scissors. Fine or small scissors can make tight cuts easier to control; the Natural History Museum lists fine scissors for small details, and IceCube recommends small scissors for detailed designs. Small precision craft scissors are helpful, but the guides do not establish that a particular brand or specialty tool is necessary.
Paper needs to fold cleanly and remain manageable when several layers are stacked. IceCube recommends thinner paper for easier cutting. NASA’s activity specifies either 8.5-by-11-inch paper or an 8.5-inch square, and suggests experimenting with tissue or wax paper. Those are instructions for the Webb activity, not a universal paper-weight rule for every template.

The Natural History Museum also lists Blu Tack or similar putty as support for making small cuts, and advises adult supervision when using sharp scissors.
Fold firmly and keep the layers aligned
- Start with the paper shape specified by the pattern. Trim or select the sheet only as the template directs.
- Make each fold in the marked order. Align the edges carefully so the layers sit on top of one another.
- Press every crease firmly. A ruler can help make crisp folds. IceCube suggests running a pencil or the handle of the scissors along the crease to reduce slipping during cutting.
- Secure shifting layers only if the pattern recommends it. DiSC Profile advises stapling above the design for its medium and complex templates. Keep staples clear of the area you will cut and follow the specific template’s instructions.
Cut the small details before the outside shape
- Mark what you plan to remove. Color or sketch the cut areas if that helps you distinguish them from the paper you need to keep.
- Begin with interior cuts. Use small, controlled snips for holes and narrow shapes while the folded paper still has its full support.
- Preserve connecting bridges. Leave enough uncut paper between delicate sections; removing too much can leave parts unsupported and make the snowflake fall apart.
- Finish with the larger outer cuts. Once the interior details are complete, cut the outside shape. Large cuts made earlier can leave the folded paper floppy and harder to handle.
- Open the layers slowly. Support the paper as you unfold it so narrow connections do not tear.
For a small internal hole, the Natural History Museum suggests placing Blu Tack or similar putty behind the paper to support the cut. Use care with sharp scissors, with adult supervision for children.

Choose between six-sided symmetry and easier cutting
IceCube explains that real snowflakes are almost always six-sided because of how water molecules bond. Its detailed templates are easier to cut in four-sided form, however. That is a practical tradeoff specific to those patterns: a four-sided design may be simpler to cut, but it should not be described as more like the form of a natural snowflake.

If you want to work freehand, begin with a simple geometric pattern rather than filling every fold with detail. Natural History Museum designer, scientist, and craft fan Alex McGoran recommends sketching a larger subject as distinct shapes, adding small texture sparingly, marking the areas to cut, and taking a conservative approach. Cut the finer details first, before larger removals reduce the paper’s support.

Fix common cutting problems
- Layers slip while cutting: Re-crease the folds firmly. A pencil or scissor handle can help press the crease; for DiSC Profile’s medium and complex patterns, follow its recommendation to staple above the design, away from the cuts.
- The folded paper feels floppy: Avoid cutting away large exterior areas before the interior details. Keep narrow sections connected by uncut paper.
- A small hole is hard to cut cleanly: Use fine scissors for control, and support the paper with Blu Tack or similar putty behind the cut area.
- The snowflake tears while opening: Unfold gradually while supporting the layers, especially around thin bridges. Check that you have not cut through the connections the design needs.
- The template’s folds do not seem to line up: Check that you began with the paper shape it expects and return to its fold marks. Templates use different sequences, so do not substitute another pattern’s folding method.
