Make a folded paper water-cycle model, animate the process with movable cutouts, or combine both. The craft shows where water can travel; a stop-motion sequence shows those movements over time. Keep the science accurate by depicting connected routes—not one fixed journey from ocean to land.

Choose a paper format for your water-cycle project

Format What you do Best suited to
Folded 3-D model Color and assemble a printable Earth-and-atmosphere template into a standing paper display. A tactile model students can handle, label, and present. NOAA estimates its activity takes 40 minutes; the lesson page does not specify whether that estimate includes printing or drying time. NOAA JetStream
Stop-motion animation Draw a fixed landscape, move separate paper water-vapor, cloud, and precipitation pieces between photographs, then add an explanation. A moving explanation that can show processes unfolding. Apple Education documents this as a classroom example, not a requirement to use a particular app or device. Apple Education

You can assemble the model first and use its landscape as inspiration for an animation, but the two activities also work independently.

What the animation should show about how water moves

The water cycle is the ongoing movement of water among the atmosphere, land, oceans, and underground. Its routes vary: evaporation and precipitation can occur over land or ocean, and water can move through several processes rather than following one universal sequence. NOAA cautions against depicting only an ocean-to-land journey. NOAA JetStream and NASA’s GPM education resources describe the cycle as continuous movement; solar energy and gravity drive that movement.

  • Evaporation: Liquid water becomes water vapor. It can happen wherever conditions allow, not only over the ocean.
  • Transpiration: Plants release water vapor to the atmosphere. NOAA notes that nearly all (99%) of the water entering plant roots transpires to the atmosphere; its lesson page does not display a publication year for this figure. NOAA JetStream
  • Condensation: Water vapor changes into liquid droplets, helping form clouds. In colder conditions, vapor can change directly into ice through deposition.
  • Precipitation: Water returns from the atmosphere as rain, snow, ice pellets, or hail.
  • Infiltration and percolation: Some water enters the ground; some moves deeper through soil.
  • Surface flow or runoff: Water moves across land toward streams and rivers.
  • Sublimation: Ice changes directly into water vapor without first becoming liquid.

Atmospheric moisture also moves with wind. Your animation can include only a few processes, but labels and narration should not imply that every water droplet follows the same path.

Fun Express Color Your Own Water Cycle Wheels - 12 Pc
  • Coloring involves the manipulation of small objects and requires several simultaneous actions like gripping and pressing. These motions help build the muscles of the fingers, hands and wrist. Working with lots of little and larger shapes on this coloring activity will help kids build these skills and their writing over time
  • Give your little artists wings with this fun coloring project. Let kids choose their colors and watch their creativity take flight
  • How many times did your parents tell you to stay within the lines? Coloring encourages spatial awareness and helps kids focus on boundaries and lines. This color your own project will also improve their concentration
  • Material: Paper with metal brad

Make the folded 3-D water-cycle craft

Gather materials

  • NOAA’s printable water-cycle template and a printer
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Colored pencils
  • Optional: cardstock for a sturdier model, or small pieces of cotton for a raised cloud detail

Ordinary copier paper works. NOAA says the template can be scaled to letter paper, though the finished model becomes very small and harder to assemble. Use glue sparingly to reduce paper warping. See NOAA JetStream’s template and instructions.

Color, cut, and fold

  1. Print the template and color its Earth/base and atmosphere sections. If you use the unlabeled version, add process labels before assembling, while the surfaces are easy to reach.
  2. Cut only along solid lines. Fold along dashed lines.
  3. Match the tabs to their corresponding folds and surfaces, then secure them with tape or a small amount of glue.
  4. Attach the atmosphere piece to the back of the Earth/base section.
  5. In the mountain region, write the surface-flow label upside down before assembly so it reads correctly when the model is put together.
  6. If desired, add small cotton-ball pieces over the clouds as a tactile detail.

Check that the labels can be read from the intended viewing angle and that the folds leave the main parts of the model visible.

Animate water movement with paper cutouts

Set up a fixed scene

Draw a landscape on a sheet of A4 paper. Include the features needed for your explanation, such as a body of water, land, a plant, and clouds. Keep the background in place throughout the animation.

Make movable pieces and plan their paths

Draw and cut separate water-vapor, cloud, and raindrop or snowflake pieces. Decide what each piece represents before you move it. For example, show vapor rising, cloud droplets forming, and precipitation falling; add a plant or surface-flow label if you want to explain transpiration or runoff. A brief storyboard helps keep the positions and labels consistent from frame to frame.

  • Interactive Water Cycle Demonstration: Build a landscape model to follow water flow through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and groundwater movement with movable rain clouds

Photograph frames and add an explanation

  1. Place the scene flat and keep the camera position steady.
  2. Take a photograph, move one or more paper pieces a small distance, and photograph the next position. Repeat to create successive frames.
  3. Use a stop-motion app to sequence the photographs. Apple Education’s classroom example describes this workflow but does not establish a required app, device, or camera.
  4. Record narration that explains the stages as the animation plays. In Apple Education’s example, students used iMovie narration and vocabulary including evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and runoff. Apple Education’s classroom example

A stable overhead support for a phone or camera may make repeated photographs easier, but it is optional; the activity does not require specialty equipment or paid software.

Use labels and narration to avoid a misleading cycle

Show water moving through connected processes rather than presenting a single mandatory order. Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and movement through land are useful starting points; include additional routes where they help tell the story. A plant provides a clear place to show transpiration, while arrows into soil distinguish infiltration from surface runoff.

For scale, NOAA JetStream says nearly 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water and estimates that about 47 inches (120 cm) of water evaporates from the ocean into the atmosphere each year on average. The lesson page displays no publication year for either figure. These are context for the subject, not measurements of a student project or its learning outcomes. NOAA JetStream
