The Stuffed Deep Sea Lobster Pattern is a hand-sewn plush inspired by Kiwa hirsuta, the deep-sea “yeti crab.” The creator’s aim was a toy recognizable as the species, not an anatomically exact model. Becky Stern’s 2011 Make: project article links printable instructions in A3 and US Letter formats.
Where to find the pattern
Kristen McQuillin created the plush and developed its pattern; Becky Stern wrote the Make: article published September 10, 2011. The article links two PDF versions: a four-page A3 file and a ten-page Letter-size file. Choose the one that matches the paper size and printing setup you can use. The source does not establish any other difference between the versions.
The article says the instructions were released under a Creative Commons license, but does not name the license version or spell out its reuse conditions. Check the license information accompanying the pattern before sharing, adapting, or using it for anything beyond personal sewing.
What making the plush involves
Plan for hand sewing, turning sewn pieces inside out, seaming, and stuffing. McQuillin describes the project as straightforward assembly for people comfortable with basic seaming and stuffing, but cautions: “I don’t recommend this project for people averse to hand-sewing or turning things inside out–there’s plenty of both involved.”

The plush is inspired by Kiwa hirsuta, but it is a playful stuffed interpretation rather than a scientific reconstruction. Its purpose is to read as the deep-sea animal while allowing the shape and construction choices of a soft toy.
