Kniterate’s Kickstarter ran from March 29 to May 8, 2017, raising $636,130 from 488 backers against a $100,000 goal. The campaign is long over: Kniterate now describes its digital knitting machine as shipping and directs prospective buyers to request a quote. The machine’s current listed specifications also differ from the campaign-era plan.
What is the Kniterate knitting machine?
Kniterate describes its product as a compact digital knitting machine that turns digital designs into knitted garments automatically. It has a double bed, individually controlled needles and stitch-transfer capability. The company presents it for small fashion businesses, design studios, makerspaces and schools, with examples of potential projects including scarves, beanies, shoe uppers, sweaters and dresses. The two weight figures conflict on the same product page. Kniterate does not resolve the discrepancy in the listed information, so treat the machine as very heavy and confirm the current shipping and handling details with the company before arranging delivery or installation.
How does the current machine differ from the 2017 campaign plan?
The Kickstarter FAQ, last updated in April 2017, described the planned 7-gauge machine as having 204 needles per bed (408 total) and a 74 cm knitting width. It gave a then-current maximum speed of 295 mm/s and said the team aimed to optimize the machine to 400 mm/s or more. Its estimated first-batch delivery was April 2018. These are two dated descriptions, not a like-for-like test. The 2017 FAQ documents the campaign plan; the current product page gives the manufacturer’s present published specifications. Its product page says, “Please contact us to place an order.” Neither page publishes a current purchase price, so prospective buyers need to contact Kniterate for a quote rather than rely on old Kickstarter reward amounts.
