PixiEditor is a free, open-source desktop editor for pixel art, painting, vector graphics, and animation. It combines pixel-focused tools with a timeline for frame-by-frame animation and a node graph for procedural workflows. Its current download page listed version 2.1.2.4 on October 4, 2026; check the official page for the latest release and platform availability.
What is PixiEditor?
PixiEditor began as a pixel-art editor and has expanded into a broader 2D graphics application. The project describes tools for pixel art, painting, vector work, animation, and procedural workflows. Raster and vector elements can be combined on one canvas, while a node graph represents document structure, layers, and effects. PixiEditor’s GitHub repository and its July 30, 2025 version 2.0 announcement describe these capabilities.

Pixel-art-specific features include a brush with a pixel-perfect option, transformations for selections and layers, and non-destructive pixel-perfect text. The editor also offers painting tools, making it suitable for work that goes beyond strictly grid-based sprites.

Raster and vector artwork
PixiEditor supports vector shapes and paths alongside raster content on the same canvas. That combination can be useful when an illustration includes both painted or pixel-based elements and scalable shapes.
Frame-based and procedural animation
The editor documents a timeline for frame-by-frame animation. Its node graph also supports procedural animation workflows. The 2.0 announcement described keyframe animation and vector animation as planned features at that time; it does not establish that either is available in a later release, so check current release notes if you need those specific capabilities.

How does the node graph fit into the workflow?
The node graph exposes parts of a document’s structure and connections, including layers and effects. The project describes using nodes to create effects and reusable workspaces. This gives users a way to build more customizable or procedural workflows alongside conventional drawing and animation tools.
Which file formats can PixiEditor export?
The project repository names PNG and JPG for raster images, SVG for vector graphics, and GIF and MP4 for animation or video. The 2.0 announcement also describes sprite-sheet export for game workflows. The announcement says users can share a project as a .pixi file.

Where can you get PixiEditor, and what does it require?
On October 4, 2026, the official download page listed version 2.1.2.4 and a Windows x64 download, and linked to Steam and Flathub. Distribution options can change, so confirm the current listing before installing.
The 2.0 release announcement specified a 64-bit system and a Vulkan-compatible GPU, including integrated graphics that support Vulkan; it also stated that 32-bit systems were no longer supported. Those are requirements given for version 2.0, not a definitive hardware statement for every later version. Check current release notes for the version you plan to use.

Is PixiEditor free?
The July 2025 announcement said the editor would remain free and open source while the project offered paid extensions and assets. The download page presents PixiPack supporter tiers with brushes and workspaces; higher tiers add a reusable animation workspace and access to extensions. The page also offers monthly and one-time support through Open Collective. Numeric tier prices were not listed in the retrieved official page, and checkout pricing may vary by country, currency, or previously owned tiers.
Is a drawing tablet necessary?
No tablet requirement or specific model compatibility is established in the official materials. A graphics tablet is an optional accessory for drawing and brush workflows, not a stated prerequisite. Before choosing one, check compatibility with your operating system and input setup.
