To recreate Luis Linares’s Tinker Bell pixie-dust pumpkin, use an artificial pumpkin, transfer a printed silhouette with a pushpin, cut the figure with artificial-pumpkin carving tools, and drill small holes for the dotted trail. Linares’s project is a detailed artificial-pumpkin carving—not a fresh-pumpkin design finished with loose glitter.
What you need
- An artificial pumpkin; Linares says any size will do.
- A printed Tinker Bell silhouette and tape.
- A pushpin to transfer the outline.
- A hot knife and artificial-pumpkin carving saws.
- A cordless drill with 1/16-inch and 1/8-inch drill bits.
- A small light bulb for illumination.
These are the materials and tools documented in Luis Linares’s six-step Instructables tutorial. Make:’s 2015 summary describes the saws as useful for small detailed cuts and the hot knife for rougher cuts; that is Make:’s explanation of the technique, rather than a detailed division of tasks in Linares’s tutorial.
How to make the Tinker Bell pixie-dust carving
1. Choose an artificial pumpkin
Use a Funkins-style artificial pumpkin for Linares’s documented version. Do not substitute a fresh pumpkin if your aim is to follow this particular project: its material and tool choices are for an artificial one.

2. Transfer the silhouette
Print the Tinker Bell silhouette, tape it to the pumpkin, and prick around its outline with a pushpin. The pinholes mark the cutting guide on the pumpkin. The original tutorial presents the silhouette with its project; the sources do not establish a separate stencil-download link.
3. Cut out the figure
Follow the transferred outline with the hot knife and artificial-pumpkin carving saws. Work carefully through the silhouette’s smaller details so the figure remains recognizable. Make: summarizes the hot knife as suited to rougher cuts and the tiny saws to detail work, but the exact order and cut dimensions are not specified in the original tutorial.

4. Drill the pixie-dust trail
Use the cordless drill and the listed 1/16-inch and 1/8-inch bits to make a scattering of small holes beside or behind Tinker Bell, forming the dotted trail. This is the project’s pixie-dust effect: Linares makes it with drilled openings, not sprinkled glitter. The original tutorial lists 1/8 inch as the larger bit size; a Make: roundup gives a conflicting second measurement, so the original specification is the one to follow.
5. Light the finished pumpkin
Linares lights the carving with a small light bulb. Make: also mentions LEDs as an option, but the project does not specify a bulb rating, electrical setup, or tested modern lighting product.

Safety while carving
Disney Experiences’ October 24, 2025 pumpkin-carving guide advises: “Please be careful when carving. Keep hands at a safe distance from the knife, take your time and always cut away from your body. Store knife safely away from small children.” It also recommends supervising children who help or are nearby.
This project uses both a hot knife and a powered drill, so it should not be treated as an unsupervised craft for young children. Disney’s guidance is general advice about knives and sharp craft tools; it does not give a step-by-step protocol for operating a hot knife, drill, or electrical lighting. Follow the tool maker’s instructions and keep children away from active cutting and drilling.
