You can make a flying squirrel plush either by sewing a fabric pattern or crocheting a snuggler. Choose the sewn route if you want fabric wings and a felt belly; choose crochet if you prefer working with bulky faux-fur yarn. The patterns use different materials and instructions, so pick one design first and follow its own supply list rather than mixing the two methods.

These are pattern-page descriptions, not a controlled comparison or independently tested difficulty ratings. The S9940 listing describes a three-toy set; its page summary does not establish exact yardage or notions, so consult the included instructions for those details.
Gather supplies for the pattern you choose
Sewn plush
Materials vary by pattern. Sew Magazine lists cotton fabric, medium-weight quilt wadding, fibre filling, coloured felt, two safety eyes, and a safety nose. A separate squirrel sewing pattern lists fur fabrics, felt, polyester toy stuffing, safety eyes with washers, matching and embroidery thread, and basic sewing tools.

That separate pattern also lists a sewing machine, needle, clips or pins, paper and fabric scissors, ruler, printer, marking pen, and a turning or stuffing tool such as a chopstick. Its listing describes illustrated step-by-step instructions, actual-size pieces, and marked seam allowances. Follow the materials and quantities for the exact pattern you buy; do not assume one pattern’s list covers another.
Crocheted snuggler
The Flying Squirrel Snuggler listing specifies bulky weight-5 furry yarn, a 5 mm crochet hook, 12 mm safety eyes, stuffing, a yarn needle, and scissors. It is a separate crochet project, not a variation of the sewn patterns.

Make the plush using its own instructions
Start by selecting a pattern, then print or prepare its pieces as directed. For a sewn toy, the broad workflow is to cut the specified fabric pieces, sew and turn them, stuff the toy, and close or attach parts according to that pattern. For the crochet version, follow its stitch and assembly instructions. The available pattern summaries do not establish a common seam order or detailed construction sequence, so use the instructions for your chosen design rather than applying steps from another pattern.
For Simplicity S9940, the Sewdirect page says the digital download includes tiled print-at-home pattern pieces and an instruction guide. The separate squirrel pattern listing says it provides actual-size pieces and marked seam allowances. Check the chosen pattern’s instructions for printing scale, cutting, assembly, and exact quantities before beginning.

Choose facial details with the recipient in mind
Plastic safety eyes and noses create a distinct finished look, but they are small components. Sew Magazine warns that handmade items made from its pattern may include small parts or long cords that pose choking or strangulation risks, and says its item is unsuitable for children under 3. For a young child, it suggests embroidered details instead of safety eyes and a safety nose. This is the page’s safety advice, not a claim that either option meets a particular safety standard.
If you choose safety components for a project, follow the selected pattern’s fitting instructions and consider the recipient and intended use. Embroidery is the alternative specifically suggested by Sew Magazine for gifting to young children.
